How To Find Your Niche On Steemit?

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

We all want to share what is on our minds on Steemit, but how to do we narrow it down and pick our niche? This is a question that I have debated since the day I got on Steemit and I have finally come up with a few answers. Here are some tips to help you pick and define your niche.

1. You don't have to start in your niche.

A lot of people join Steemit with a plan of what they are going to write about and think that they have a winning niche.  When they start, they find it hard to get traction and often get frustrated. My suggestion is to start having a lot of conversations and different blogs when you post.

If you know you want to ultimately talk about business, do a bunch of different blogs in different fields of business. See what people are responding to and then replicate that kind of content again and see if you keep the momentum. When you find an area of business you can confidently blog about, and that is getting some good views and votes, then you may have found your first niche.

2. You don't have to just have one niche.

For some, getting into a niche and staying in it can be amazing if you really dominate that niche. For most people, we like to share many things and may have some unique and useful knowledge in one niche, but like talking about a lot of other things. That is 100% ok. Give yourself the freedom to talk about different things, but keep an eye on what is working and try to pick a couple of niches to contribute to regularly.

3. What do you learn about?

Not what you know, but what you learn about? If you start blogging about your extensive knowledge of 90's movies, but you are not learning anything new, then you will run out of things to say.  If you read crypto blogs every day and watch the charts, then your knowledge in the crypto space is growing daily. You will have more to blog about over the long-run.

Maybe one of your niches is 90's movies, but then another one should be on the subject that you are learning every day. Learning new things and then sharing them will allow you to continue to grow in your niche.

4. What do you want to get better at?

What skills do you want to learn? What do you want to build? One of the great things about blogging is you can get paid to learn new skills and then document that process to share with your followers. If you don't know what you want to write about and what niche you want to be in, then you can pick what you want to be good at, then go out and do it. Blog about the process and you will likely find success. Even if you don't do well at the skill, the blog could be a home run.

5. What really inspires or motivates you?

Being able to write is important in blogging, but so is passion. Passion bleeds through the screen. Passion will keep you blogging even if you want to take a few days off. Don't pick a niche because you think you can make money in it, pick a niche because you are passionate about it. It will make all the difference in what you write and how your fans read it.

6. What is unique about your perspective?

There is a cool guy on here his name is Kyle or @kdcory and he followed me and I got to know him a little. He started Steemit and wanted to talk about a lot of cool topics, but each one had many people writing about those topics. It is going to be tough to break in. Then I read his intro blog post and learned that he is only 16, in college and a really smart and ambitious guy.

What makes his story unique is he is so young and accomplishing so much. If he can find a way to talk about the things he wants to talk about but through the unique perspective as a child prodigy, then he can offer something that people can't get anywhere else. You should give him a follow, I'm sure he'll find his voice on here and it is going to be fun to watch. The point is, use your unique perspective to tell your stories and picking your niche.

7. Be yourself.

Don't try and be something you are not. Whatever niche you pick, find a place where you can be yourself. Don't fake it. If you can be yourself it will make it a lot more fun to read and to write.

Another very informative post, I have come to the conclusion that if your writing shows passion (as you have said) then it shines through. Pick topics that really interest you and write from the heart,

That is 100% right. Thank you for coming back and reading another post. I really appreciate it.

Hey...finding one's niche can be difficult to find sometimes. Yes, I'm a minnow and wish that I could find someone to answer some of my questions. I comment with photos and upvote, but my reputation score does not change and my wallet does not go up. Im wondering why. I don't upvote my own comments, and Im careful who I upvote. I don't upvote a post with just 2 pics. I don't see that adds much value to anything. So, if you respond to this comment I would appreicate you. !

@Carolynseymour I appreciate your feedback. I will try to help you real quick. The simple answer is you are not doing enough. You may be doing the right things, but not enough of them. First you only follow 18 people. When you start you should follow anyone that interacts with you. You should follow all the top people after you reply to their posts. You've only posted a couple of times. To see success you need to put content out there. You only have 11 posts. To put it in perspective, I had 11 posts within the first 48 hours of being on the site. You need to pump out more content. You have only replied to 78 posts. I post about 78 times a day. You have 60 followers but only follow 18. That doesn't incentivize people to follow you. You need to give them a reason. Your latest post was about consistency on Steemit and then you don't post for four days. All the stuff I have talked about are things I've done and things I live. Things that worked for me or things that I have seen work. I add value or at least try with every single post. My recommendation to you, follow a hell of a lot more people, write a lot more posts add value and keep doing what you are doing. Success on Steemit isn't given, it is earned and you have to work your ass off. I've spent 8 hours a day on Steemit sometimes 12 a day since the day I started. A total of 235 hours... I track my hours. That is a lot of time. I have a lot of posts and I post a lot of content. I engage with a lot of people and I put in a lot of effort. Nothing comes easy here, it takes work and I think that is the one thing you are missing. You seem like a very interesting person and have a lot to say, now just go out there and say it. If what you write adds value, people will find you. It just takes time. I hope that helps. I try not to sugar coat anything and some call me blunt, but I would rather give you good advice, truthful advice with no BS so there is no misunderstanding. I'll follow you to see how things are going. Also if you are going to ask people questions and seek advice, follow them so they can get something out of the exchange as well. Provide value...

To improve your reputation score, you have to open yourself up and let people get to know you. Also, an introduction post of more than one sentence would help. People want to know about you. Let them. I am not very open in my personal life, but I am learning. Welcome to steemit.

That is great advice!

@sykochica has a whole series of posts that cover a lot of your questions. Here's the latest - Where Can I Get Steemit Help. Here's to your enjoyment and success on Steemit!

Thank you so much. Haphazard...I appreciate you.

You're welcome!

Welcome! You have found a treasure. @walkingkeys is one of the BEST people you can follow on steemit. Also, check out @ogochukwu and the 50 word story contest. That is a good way to get some exposure and possibly win some steem.

@callme-pep you are too kind. Thank you so much for the kind words. I hope @carolynseymour takes my advice. I appreciate it.

I spent a long time replying and trying to help you out and got no response. That is disappointing.

Hi walkingkeys, thank you so much for being blunt and to the point. Yes, I appreciate you for being like this. I'm sick of bullshit and beating around the bush type of people. Now I know more what I need to start doing. But I'm confused about good vs bad posts. What is a good post? I see some people who create a post with just one pic. I wouldn't say that is a good post. I could do something like that all day long. But I prefer to write some content that provides value. I will start following you around and learning something new from you. And again, thank you for taking the extra time and effort to lead me in the right direction.
!

You are more than welcome.
A good post?... That depends... it has to add value. Entertainment value, valuable knowledge or training, time-saving value... something. Sometimes a simple picture can add value, but it doesn't often.
If you want to write, keep writing the posts that you are doing, but do it a lot more often. You have to figure out what works for you. You have 11 total posts you've written, I did 11 in my first two days. It wasn't until I got around 60 did I start figuring out what knowledge and skills I had that the Steemit community responded to. I still write what I want, but with topics and key words that resonate on Steemit.

Another thing to do, is once you find a niche, then spend time diving into new ones as well. I write a lot on Steemit, Poetry and Funny. I have a good foundation in those and now branching out in to history and philosophy. I'm taking my time. I committed in my mind that it would take 3 months to really gain some traction on Steemit, even with my background in blogging, writing and social media. It will take time, give it time and just keep putting good content out... also read my Steemit Secrets posts... they'll help you get noticed by whales... https://steemit.com/steemit/@walkingkeys/the-complete-guide-to-steemit-success

There is a lot of good info there if you are really wanting to succeed. There are no shortcuts here, that is just how it is. But the rewards on the other end can be sweet. Good luck.

Can I read your first 11 posts that you wrote in 2 days?

Yeah, they are on my blog. Just scroll down.

Some awesome and inspiring suggestions! Resteemit for others to perhaps learn.

Thank you so much! Your support means a lot.

@walkingkeys, you got it perfect man. I don't have a niche, I don't know what to write. I have no expertise nor wisdom to share in Crypto or tech or other popular subjects. and I don't know basics of photography. I don't have any idea as to how to narrate a story succinctly and engaging. My profession doesnt have much to say. Same mundane stuff that I have been doing for years. It's a dilemma for me always.
I still haven't figured it out much. Many are doing it beautifully here though. 😊

I understand completely, but there must be something that you want to learn about. Something you want to build or know. Start doing one of those things and then document the journey with all of us on Steemit. You will find people watching your process to help make their process easier. You are smart and can communicate it, but you just need to try something new. I'm positive you will figure it out!

I am interested in a lot of things but I will always post about my art and majority of people I followed are artists. Great tips as always. Upvoted!

That is awesome. When you are really active in one category, you can bring new people in sometimes by posting about other things occasionally. It can help you grow. Great strategy, and you are doing some awesome things on here. Keep it up!

Upvoted. Useful info

Thank you very much!
