Hey everyone,
How is your evening treating you?
Let's discuss ads. Who doesn't like them :p. Now as you can tell there are no ads on this site and if you wish you can ad your own at the bottom of a post. It is a good system that lets people use ads if they wish but doesn't force it on people in the site itself. We are still growing without the revenue and I think there are some big changes to come. So no it looks like, at this time, we do not need ads. But how you feel if they were added? Would it turn you off to the site?
If we had a banner or side ads it could bring in a lot of revenue to the site. This money could be split into paying the team at steem, putting more money into advertising and buying back steem to burn. For those of you unaware of that term, burning a crypto means making the coin unavailable to anyone (since you can't delete it). By doing this you decrease the total of the coin and this raise the value of it. We can decide what percentage of the ad money goes where but it can really help the network grow.
On the negative side ads come with taking up space on our site and restrictions. Some ads have requirements that steem users might not be happy with. I think we can find a middle ground and a small banner or two wouldn't bug me personally as long as it was not obtrusive. Having money come in to buy back steem can go a long way.
But that is just me, what do you think?
As long as Steem holders get rewarded

My dream for advertisement is this...
Steemit partners with a service such as Anonymous Ads. Their simple embed code gets whitelisted so it works on Steemit. Anonymous Ads of course begins accepting & paying out in Steem in addition to their current Bitcoin.
Every Steemian can now create banner ad slots in their posts. Rather than bid bots & the trending page, it becomes a valuable alternative to purchase ad space direct from other Steemians to promote your own blog, posts, & projects.
We get a working advertising system vs. the current broken promotion system. Ad revenue creates a de facto unlimited payout timeframe allowing good content to be “evergreen.”
The system should be largely self policing too. If a blogger goes overboard with ad slots they’ll risk being unfollowed or outright flagged if folks are truly miffed!
Anonymous Ads already has the ad inventory creation & management tools. It would probably be extremely simple to allow their code and create a user driven advertising market overnight.
And of course the system also easily allows outside advertisers to tap into Steemit, and Steemit creators to advertise on outside sites as well from a single account/dashboard.
The ad service takes a percentage of course, and it could be increased or divided to allow some back to Steemit Inc. or for burning purposes.

Love the idea! Hope @ned and @steemitblog notice this suggestion.

Thanks! I have to say, I actually like Project Wonderful’s ad bidding system much better. It would be great for fostering inter Steemian advertising. But Anonymous Ads gets a bonus for crypto friendliness. Either way, I think the solution is not for Steemit to run ads & find a way to profit share with the community, but for the community to be in control of ads & bring value to Steemit.

Actually, you should really write a proposal explaining your idea on utopian.io. It is linked to your steemit account, so you would get rewarded as well.
These kinds of good ideas should be mentioned and formulated to have a good chance at being implemented.

Ads on steemit ? wasn't the whole point of leaving FB behind was annoying ads?
So let's just add one more certain thing in life - Tax , Death and Ads?
On second thought , as long as there is no creepy targeting and the revenue gets fed back into steem ecosystem ...can work!!
BTW , that's like a bit more sophisticated promoted section , which steemit already has on the homepage.

There kind of are ads on Steemit with all the paid votes floating around. Just look at the crap that @jerrybanfield pumps out. All of his crappy posts are blatant advertising.
I wouldn't support advertising on this platform. That's what sets it apart from every other platform out there. It quite simply doesn't belong.

The only ads I'll support are AI-powered ads that suggest ACTUAL relevant, supplemental content, not the next internet trash. I'm tired of internet trash.

This is definitely an interesting idea. I like the idea of using it to buy back and burn steem over time. Ideally, the dev team will be able to profit off the website without ads. For that reason, I would rather see some of the money used to promote good content creators.
Currently, it is still very hard to launch a successful steem account (I'm trying right now). I would love to see a way for steemit to further reward users who create good content. Maybe this doesn't have to be directly monetarily, but in a way that helps people gain views.

Yes I wouldn't mind
Unless there would be unskippable video ads
But ads that don't really get in my way and just are on the sides are totally fine

Yeah i think it would be fine.
Unless it gets to the point of Video ads.
Then NO
but if there are these harmless "Click for 100k$ ads" then it's fine (not harmless don't click on them, i quarantee you won't get 100k$)

I think as long as it's minimal it could be beneficial. I hate those annoying video ads that auto play when reading an article. I usually stay away from sites that use those.

Steemit obviously offers a powerful marketing platform. The daily increasing numbers of people joining steemit means that it offers a large (and by the way, still growing) and diverse market.
Personally howeevr, I would not be so quick to encourage ads. Why? Let me put it this way. Steemit is a media platform in which content creation and curation are both incentivized.
One of the challenges that confront the platform, is the fact that the quest for rewards, is taking away the necessary engagement among members, which, mark you, is a central aspect for the future of the platform.
What we should be doing, is looking for creative ways to’ encourage members to engage. Ads do the exact opposite. They distract members, often times leading them to other sites.

Steemit has grown into me regardless at this point, if the ad wont bug me or make me want to smash my screen then im okay with it so far its good for the system

Hmmm! First impressions were HELL NAW!
Then I thought about the wasted space, and how engagement could be directly rewarded, wealth could be distributed to the community in the form of increased STEEM value, and how analytics could be a steem blockchain platform so that it connects users with the content they would actually like to see, and the sponsors with the people they want to receive the message.
Entire cryptocurrencies are built for this purpose (https://token.ad/, https://basicattentiontoken.org/ et al) and why not us?
You may be on to something and this warrants good discussion in the comments here.

Perhaps it's good to show some ads but the revenue should be equally diatribute to all active user. Equal distribution, 1=1.

Just leave steemit out of it
Let's face it, advertising is often annoying. It's designed to be. Advertising is not supposed to blend in, or be ignored. It is supposed to shout at you, attention grabber.

If ads won't be aggressive and annoying. To be honest it can also helps creator to gain more SBD and SP but putting ads in Steemit must be done wisely

I think this is good for Advertisers but I think it might will be like youtube or facebook where´s everywhere ads and in my opinion they are shit.
But in second view this good beacause it will hold Streemians and Steemers more rewarded and all this.

I would really be bored. Anyway you can put a banner in a sign that leads to the page you want, this would be an ad. But as no-one does this, I guess the rewards system is sufficient. Good question anyway.

seems to be a nice suggestion to have some add in the platform. It will be beneficial for both user and network growth. But there should be checked on the adds people may overburden this platform by lot of advertisement. After all excess of every thing is bad. nice and applicable idea. keep sharing @whatageek
