People all over the world are showing more active interest in also taking their leisure for reading over the internet. I'm aware that Steemit is now part of the web search engines and it has the potential to emerge on top in the near future as we grow more and more each day.

Steemit Digest is a reference work for finding daily interesting topics as seen only here in Steemit as it's created to brag the gem of our authors in different topics, whether it's undervalued or trending.

Alchemist

Did you know that *Alchemy* was a combination of chemistry and magic. In ancient times and during the Middle Ages, magicians and so-called wise men sometimes worked with chemicals in trying to change one thing into another. They were often interested only in the weird effects. Those who experimented with chemical changes and effects were called *alchemists.* Alchemists are now felt to be unscientific, but some of their ideas and strange arts of mixing and heating led to the modern science of chemistry.

One of the persistent goals of alchemy was to change the common metals, such as lead and mercury, into "noble metals" like gold and silver. Another goal was to discover a "philosopher's stone," a material supposed to cure all diseases and make people live longer or forever. Lacking our modern knowledge of the elements and of atomic structure, the alchemists tried various mixtures, mainly by trial and error.

For centuries, medieval kings hired alchemists, hoping to gain health and wealth from their promised wonders. Such noted 13th century philosophers as Albertus Magnus and Roger Bacon supported alchemy. By the 16th century, alchemy was losing respect. Theophrastus Paracelsus (1490-1540), was one of the last well-known alchemists, and even he raised many questions about the old, useless magical methods.

Today, chemical wonders can be controlled and produced and diseases cured not by the magic of alchemy, but through patient, intelligent use of systematic science.
