This week our local newspaper featured a section on projects local school children were working on in classes. One of the area high schools got front page coverage for their agriculture classes having teens build miniature greenhouses. Each student got to design and build a small greenhouse (the size of a birdhouse). They each got to plant seeds to keep in their greenhouse to see if they would grow as part of the lesson.
Learning How To Grow Plants In Fun Ways!
As someone who loves to garden I enjoyed reading this news story and seeing pictures of all the different greenhouses the teens designed. Learning how to grow plants and how to grow your own food is an important lesson for young people to learn. Even using miniature greenhouses, students can learn the materials needed to build a greenhouse, how they work, and how to grow plants inside of them.
We live in a society that loves food that is fast! Fast food restaurants, pre-cooked meals, frozen prepared meals, etc dominate our culture so that our food is processed and made in factories. So much of our food is unhealthy and full of preservatives, high levels of salt/sugar, fats, and more.
Teaching teens how to grow fresh fruits and vegetables is an important skill to learn. Projects like building greenhouses can be used in lessons about nutrition, healthy eating habits, unhealthy eating habits, how plants grow and different stages of growth. Kids get a chance to learn useful skills along with learning about scientific processes and health.
There are many different types of greenhouses. They come in different shapes and sizes. Some are large and some are small (like birdhouses). I love the idea of having kids design their own greenhouses, build them, and test them out by growing plants in them. It isn't hard to make one. All you need are simple supplies most people have around the house. You can use plastic bottles, cups, egg cartons, and more.
A greenhouse may seem like a big project but in reality making small ones can be simple. You can recycle objects you probably throw away all the time. Below are links to different simple greenhouses you can build at home with your kids.

Designing and building a small greenhouse is really cool.
Learning to grow greenhouses and gardens is a skill that is going to be increasingly useful in the future as the world becomes less livable due to most humans over consumption an over production of waste.

Very true. My goal is to have a large garden and grow a lot more of our own food. Greenhouse skills are definitely useful.

Absolutely important that we try to reclaim some of the skills that our grandparents knew as basic common sense. We've been gardening more seriously for the past several years.
Although, truth be told, I'm feeling just a little bit guilty as I sit here snacking on LateJuly Restaurant-Style Sea Salt Thin&Crispy Organic Tortilla Chips 😱
Even though the ingredient list is relatively small, let's face it, these things are made from ground corn - not necessarily the most nutritious base.

We all have our guilty pleasures. Even the healthy sounding stuff still may have some questionable ingredients. It would be nice to teach the younger generations better habits and more about the food we eat. That being said...I could go for some purple corn chips. Never seen that brand before. The purple ones look neat.

I agree it's so beneficial to teach kids how to grow plants and build greenhouses. Getting kids to foster relations with plants earlier is key for them to continue it into later life! Love that second photo peeking into the greenhouse, by the way, looks so mysterious and magical :D
Thanks for furthering plant connection!

Thanks for the nice comment. I love gardening and can't wait until my kid is old enough to work out in the yard with me. It was cool seeing our high school kids on the front page of the paper being praised for their greenhouse projects.

Oh that’s awesome! Gotta be a big sense of accomplishment! I have a farmer friend whose little boy loooves gardening. He grew his own carrots last year (at 3 :))

Anytime you can teach someone how to be productive rather than destructive is a win in my book. It's too easy to be destructive, but it takes time and patience to be productive. It's a win-win situation all the way around.

I agree. It's a good thing to show kids how to grow and create things rather than destroy the Earth or their bodies with unhealthy food. It helps foster better habits into adulthood.

@marxrab, two captions that are attention grabbing "fun ways to grow plants" and "how to teach kids".
For me, this sums up everything. A lot of us take planting or growing of plants as something stressful, needless and a burden. But in the real sense, it has and would still be helpful.
Climate change, global warming, heat wave and a lot more are as a result of man's maltreatment to plants and the environment.
Imagine taking what would be of benefit to us as stressful??? Huh...
It starts from our foundation (as kids), and that brings me to the second point you have raised, "teaching kids how to grow plants".
I believe that if we can get it right with this kids, the next generation wouldn't have to suffer Much of climate change.
Thanks @marxrab for sharing
Regards

A wonderful work very beautiful. What you learned to the students there. Taking care of the most beautiful plants in life, educating them to build greenhouses and adapting to overcome some life conditions is a great achievement.
Thank you dear @marxrab for all your work and effort

I agree, it is so important to teach young kids how to grow plants and take care of them. My mother loves plants, and she teaches my nieces how to take care of them. Excellent post my dear!

I wish all schools did this so many people have lost these skills. Both of my grandma's always had a garden. I did not have one until a few years back. I've scaled back on what I grow but I love eating food I grew from seeds.
