A story of a mute girl: the kind heart that changed her life

in steemiteducation •  7 years ago  (edited)

In my primary school, there was a girl named ''Dilmi''. When we were all playing and laughing, all she did was sit in the corner of the classroom. She had no friends and no one cared about her.

It's all because of one reason: she didn't speak at all.

No matter what happens, she didn't tell word to another kid. We asked her many questions, threatened her to speak but no results. She kept her lips sealed.

This was also a big problem to our class teachers. Dilmi was in our class for 5 years but we haven't heard her voice. Teachers tried in many ways but they failed. After that they became furious and started to scold her. Neither of them couldn't understand her problem.

And her classmates, we are monsters. Well, we are little and don't know much about the world. But what we did was horrible. We started to bully her. We sneaked after her and pushed her off the corridors. We hit her with paper balls when she wasn't looking. We even stomped her shoes! Oh my god, remembering those brings tears to my eyes and I blame myself for being this dumb and cruel!

Now when I think about that times, I couldn't imagine how painful her school days was! The whole class is against her and nobody understands her!

But finally....

Someone is on your side                                                                                                                          you're not alone

Proving that, then came a miracle worker. She had a little brother and he entered school when we are in grade 5.  His class teacher Mrs. Anoma was strict but a thoughtful and reasonable woman. She had many experiences with children. She was curious about the new boy's sister and she became close to her. Every day Mrs. Anoma summoned Dilmi to her class and  spend a lot of time with her.

We all knew that she was investigating Dilmi but we thought it was just a waste of time. But we never knew that the silent girl loosed her lips for that teacher.

One day, her life changed...

I still remember that day very clearly. We were running free in the class because our teacher was absent. Mrs. Anoma came to our class with Dilmi. She told us to sit down and we went to our chairs while staring at them curiously.

"Dilmi is going to speak with you from now on" She said.

"But it's useless, she never talks with us" One of my friends said.

"Silent!"Mrs.Anoma roared. "Wait till she speaks. Dilmi, sing this song" She handed Dilmi her Sinhala text book.

Dilmi opened her mouth. The whole class had become stunned. What is that voice? It can't be Dilmi, right? God, she is the only one who was singing that song. But that voice! It's one of the sweetest voices that I've heard in my life. It flowed all around the classroom making our hearts warm.

"Thank you everyone for listening to me. " The voice stopped.

We were all looking at Dilmi with open mouths. Mrs. Anoma came forward. Her lips eyes were shining and there was a smile on her lips lightening her face.

"Now you all have seen that she can speak. So she is no different from you. Now children, would you treat her nicely if Dilmi wants to be friends with you?

"Of cause, she is awesome! Sorry for being rude to you Dilmi" We nodded our heads happily.

Mrs.Anoma turned to Dilmi."Now your nightmare is over, Dilmi. Your school days will be better."

Dilmi came in front of her. Her eyes were swimming with tears, her whole body seemed to be trembling but the way her lips stretched showing her white teeth was the sign that said she was happy.

"Thank you very much Mrs.Anoma. I'll never forget your kindness!" Mrs. Anoma smiled at her once more and left the classroom. Then the whole class became a honeycomb, we gathered around Dilmi.

"Oh Dilmi, what a sweet voice you have! Why did you hide it from us? No one in our classroom has an amazing voice like that! Can you forgive us for what you did to you? Please sing another song"

From that day, Dilmi became a very close friend for us. She sang often because we begged her but she never became too proud of herself. She even sang in the school assembly and she became popular in the whole school.

But one thing remained secret...

We never knew what caused Dilmi to kept tongue hidden and we didn't know how Mrs. Anoma cured her scar on her heart. We didn't ask that from Dilmi neither because we don't want to scratch her old wound. We once heard that Mrs.Anoma saying to our class teacher that something about her family background was the reason for that. But she Dilmi's secret kept safe with her until she retires from the school.

One thing is certain...

If it wasn't for Mrs.Anoma, Dilmi's school life would have beenashtrayy. She would have been bullied forever and she would have remained forever as a black horse. But Mrs.Anoma had helped her to get off from the trench that she was in.

Mrs. Anoma is one of the the ladies that I respect the most. If there were many teachers who has a good heart like her, the future of the world would be better.

RESPECT TO ALL TEACHERS!!!

This is a real story. I made up the names.

I appreciate your comment.

Hey, I didn't even know till I read the post. But I think that I've seen Dilmi. Anyway we have to respect the teachers who brings light to our lives.

I think so.
Some teachers are blessings to children.
