My mother the woman with the green fingers
That's how all our children call her.
She will be 77 this year. She grew up on a farm in the Northern cape. She learned from her father to plant vegetables. My father died three years ago but she still plants her own vegetables every year. She has never bought green beans in a shop. She also does not buy vegetable seed, she uses the vegetable seed she gets from the vegetables that have grown.
She has taught and showed us several times how to plant vegetables.
Every time I tried to plant vegetables, it was not as big and as beautiful as hers. I began to believe that the vegetable seed I bought at the stores was old.
Because I wanted to brag with my vegetables the following year, I stole a bit of her seed.
You will not believe me but my vegetables were not nearly as beautiful as hers.
I simply gave up to plant vegetables myself.
The same happened to my brother, he also just gave up to plant vegetables.
In the end, there was only one solution for us. We believed that she has a green hand.
We had to put our pride in our pockets.
Every time when we decided to plant vegetables, we have to fetch her to come plant it for us.
She makes her own compost heap with vegetables peals, eggshells and leaves. She also has her own chickens that lay eggs. She believes in using fresh eggs when baking. She through nothing away and is a great example to every body in sustainable living and recycling.
