Question:
Some students struggle and need extra help after school hours. What are some ways that you have suggested to parents on helping their own child? If you are a parent, what are some things you have done for you child? Have you used tutors? What are your experiences with tutors and helping students at home?
Answer:
In this homework, I'd like to share my experience as a learner.
When I was a child, my mother was very particular with my studies. She wanted me to have good grades and study a lot. It wasn't a bad thing, though. Because despite being strict, she was there supporting me.
I remember my routine after school during that time. When I get home, she welcomes me with an afternoon snacks and we'll eat together. As we're eating, she asks me about my day at school, be it the lessons or activities or even the times I played with friends. I think this kind of action created a bond between us. She listens to me, asks me some questions then gives her comments. This usually lasts for thirty minutes.
After that, she gives me time to play with my cousins and watch anime with them. During that time, Japanese anime was aired on Philippine TV every afternoon and early evening, so that was our time to unwind. After the evening anime, it's time to face my homework and study.
Well, I usually study by myself, but my mom was just near me... so whenever there are some stuff I don't understand, I just ask her. She somehow trained me to study independently, but despite this, she's just there whenever I need her assistance. It was enough. :)
The situation I mentioned above started when I was in the fourth grade in elementary. Before that, she was hands on guiding me in my studies. She helps me in making my homework and she was super strict in terms of penmanship and studying. If she didn't like my penmanship, she tears my notebook page and let me write again. (lol) Then during exam period, I'm not allowed to play at all. (Poor me!)
Since I have a good relationship with my mom, I told her my thoughts. I challenged her (lol). If she lets me play and watch anime, I'll do better at school. She accepted the challenge and was surprised at my improvement, so from then on, I could get my freedom. :) But still with her support from time to time.
When I was in the fifth to sixth grade, I became more independent. That time, my mom accepted tutee from our school. My classmate and her brother's mom was very busy at school, so she asked my mom to tutor them, especially the younger brother. That time, I helped her by studying with my classmate and also in making the homework of her other tutee. When I was in sixth grade, I even had my own tutee who was in the first grade. ^^ It was a fun experience.
To sum it all up, it's important for parents to have an involvement in their child's learning. Creating a bond with them so the child won't be scared to share his or her concerns to them is also important. Parents who can listen and are open-minded can be a big help to children as well.
If the parents are busy, it's okay to let the child have a tutor... as long as they have even a short time to talk with their kids and ask them about their school activities. In my classmates case, their mom fetches them at night after work, then she'll stay for a few minutes at home to talk to my mom and the kids. It's like a group bonding for us.
Knowing that the parents are supporting the children can really assist their learning. Children becomes more motivated to learn when they know that their parents are there to support them. :)
