Simple image issue solution

in steemithelp •  8 years ago  (edited)

So I see loads of image issues and loads of frustrated steemians, well I have the solution. It is quite simple. Shrink the image. The issue isn't with the hosts but a steemit issue displaying images larger then the posts viewing frame.

EDIT: Thanks to @ausbitbank for finding the real problem.... Images need to be smaller then  31.75 Kb if you want them to work right meow. A real fix to the image proxy should come soon.

I had been trying to figure out what was going on and the image download gets cut off part-way through even if you're using the terminal - please see my comments here

TLDR: I think its a problem with the image proxy server at img1.steemit.com , images only work if they're smaller then ~31.75Kb and get truncated if they're larger.

As far as I can tell (but I haven't accounted for a bandwidth issue) if the image is narrower then the frame your text shows up in, it will work. If it is wider then the text frame it starts to load then cuts off. This may be an issue with too high a quality of images but I don't think because if you set up tables with images like in this post only one loads. You can watch it happening as it loads. One image causes the next to fail because there isnt enough space width wise.

EDIT: Yeah ignore me and listen to @ausbitbank .... cuz after some deeper looking it is the size of the file.

You were sorta right , shrinking the image is a workaround for now :)

Yeah but I was wrong on why lol... an u have exact numbers an stuff. I love exact numbers. I didn't want any confusion on whom was correct lol

That would also explain why they all work fine on the mobile app esteem.

I was thinking about esteem, I dont have a device handy to test right now but I have a theory they dont use the image server at all and just load images directly.

If anyone wants to test, check what IP this image reports from both the esteem app and a browser. If both are the same, they use the proxy server - if not they load images directly

99.,.158, so esteem loads images directly.

Thanks :)

My buddy just punched me its his IP, knew what I was doing

I've been uploading images from my website library and I do cut down the size of the files...maybe not enough if I want to put them side by side in a table. The results show in the link that @d3nv3r provided. It's so frustrating because in preview they were fine, but when it went live it turned to crap.
Someone mentioned posting thumbnails and then make it clickable to the full sized image. I think that's a good idea however, I would honestly rarely do it because... well, I'm lazy and I don't usually click to a larger image on anyone else's post either. So, what's the solution then? ::shrugs::

The issue seems to be fixed now anyway, it was actually that art post of yours where I first noticed the problem but it loads fine now..

As for lazyness and thumbnails, check out steemimg.com - after uploading an image it offers you the full html code for a thumbnail linked to full size:
<a href="https://www.steemimg.com/image/XYQDB"><img src="https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/09/29/satoshireleaseswhitepaper8e304.th.png" alt="satoshireleaseswhitepaper8e304.png" border="0" /></a>

One extra click after upload, or visible for anything in the library by going to the image page, then embed codes, "thumbnail image linked", html and copy :)

are you telling me at the ".th" is all I've ever needed to create thumbnails in HTML? I never bothered looking it up because...I'm an idiot. No, wait...you've got 2 urls for the same image. Ah...maybe I'm still an idiot. LOL

This is some good info.

Thanks for the knowledge

Thanks for the info, @d3nv3r! Resteemed!

I love me a resteem!!

I just resteemed and voted this thread as well because I wouldn't have made the connection if you hadn't posted thread this on /r/steemit..

I've had a really slow day, feeling a bit sick after a massive feed celebrating @krystle 's birthday last night - so I'm not sure I'll get a post out today myself.. Hopefully this gets sorted out soon

Tyvm, glad I got to be part of figuring it out in some way

can you explain this issue this user is having?

https://steemit.com/steemit/@richristow/steemit-glitch-or-stupid-newbie-error

Its rather unique i think but the timing....

Oh wow missed that too, thats a totally different type of fail. Will comment there I have a theory

Cool thanks

That's a different issue I used to get only with imgur files and replacing http:// with https:// seems to have stopped this from happening to me for now. Or s/he forgot to add the < p> or < /p> (no spaces) on either side...

awesome I dropped a link to this post in his comments.
