EXORCISE HER CALAMITY

it was a strange day
at the ancient city.
all the doors are closed
bloody redness dirt roads.
there was something amiss,
still living the afterlife
of an ancient glory
 
it’s pouring outside
and she’s inside wishing.
a parch of linoleum
mark off the living room.
places she once lived in
existed only among wanderers.
how hollow, how ghostly
 
closer to a flagellant’s pleasure
at being scourged,
no lines of demarcation
to protect reckless girls
from the danger.
the danger of romance,
and the danger of curiousity
 
the whole idea of redemption
in delirious exultation
for a diminutive woman.
when she spoke in tongues,
in tongues translated into sounds,
in the language of laughter,
of spastic blurts or frenzy
 
they all shouted
of gospel preaching
at the ancient city
