LIFELINE
by Ikhwanul Halim
an opening line that entices the world
into your mind
came from a family story
life was chaotic
my concept of love had shifted
over the years
a direct opening can be difficult
a certain blurring of lines
between humans and animals
can you take two or fourteen weeks
off from your regular life
learn anything you didn't know?
thrive under pressure
will you be required to sit and listen
as everybody critique your work?
the rejections pile up
acceptances are few and far
poetry keeps me afloat
poetry brings surprise and clarity
I didn’t want anything literary
just matter-of-fact
from the front line of tragedy
