SUMMERTIME

flat sea seen from a balcony
while a gentle breeze caresses Rita's hair
in a hot summer afternoon
after tea and sex and food and wine

the hammock hooks creak in their hinges
hummingbirds swarm around the bougainvillea trees.
dogs bark, children laugh and run
while the sprinkler plays along wetting the green lawn

life is new and love is born afresh
like an old bike delivered from dereliction
in a joyful ride of recognition
and plentiful renditions of flesh

life is good and long and good again
an old bike can ride once more down the cobbled streets
causing the colony of seagulls to disband with the loud bell ring
and the creaking of the old springs

rusty chain oiled anew
happy pedaling goes through
a new life without strife

new life for a new bike
new bike for new kids
new kids for new life
kids, dogs, bike and wife

dogs barks
clear sky
do dreams, like seagulls fly?
do dreams, like rescued bikes, ride?

love and hope
in a new summer sky

NOTES

This poem is about an idyllic dream inspired by romance and by the mediterranean lifestyle, a story of starting again with new opportunities, not unlike my other poem "Clean Slate" but with a more romantic, nostalgic aura. Starting anew is compared with the new life an old bike can get from a new, caring owner.

absolutely beautiful - bravo!

Well, Heather, you've got a new follower (#501) to be precise. Glad you liked the poem. Thanks for your visit. Come again soon.

¡Gracias maestra!
