Superfoods
A type of food that contains high doses of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, anti-cancer properties and other amazing health benefits. Consuming these foods may reduce the risk of chronic diseases, boost life and well being.
There are plenty of superfoods and the goal of this superfood series brought to you by @joyrobinson is to showcase some superfoods, their superb health benefits and how to fit them into your diet.
First in the list is Manuka Honey.
Origin
Manuka comes from the word "Maori", the native language of New Zealand where Manuka Honey is originated.
Manuka Honey is produced by bees that gathers nectar from the flowers of "Leptospermum scoparium" or known as Manuka tree. The bee keepers stablished hives in areas that have high concentrations of Manuka trees.
Nutrition Facts Differences Of Manuka Honey And Regular Honey
Regular unfiltered raw honey is already known for its nutritional source of Vitamin B6, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium and Zinc but Manuka contains them up to four times than the regular flower honey.
In recent years, manuka honey become so popular after research discovered that it also possess more higher enzymes and anti bacterial properties than the regular honey. It contains Methylglyoxal or MGO and Dihydroxyacetone. These are chemicals which is more stable anti-bacterial effect than hydrogen peroxide in regular honey types. The reason why Manuka is also called as medicinal honey.
Manuka Honey Authenticity
Manuka honey is pretty expensive because it's rare, limited source, only flowers for a few weeks every year, it contains tremendous health benefits and here is how to recognize a real manuka honey.
UMF : UMF stands for "Unique Manuka Factor" . A standard of recognizing the level concentration of manuka's MGO (Methylglyoxal). UMF is also a trademark that can only be use by official licensees and indicated on front of every manuka honey's container label.
The container should contain the the license number and labeled in New Zealand.
Manuka Honey Amazing Benefits And Uses
For Skin Problems
- This superfood is effective remedy against a variety of diseases. From reducing skin allergies and acne. A natural home remedy for eczema, cuts and wounds and also fights skin infections.
- Applying a small amount to your face as a facial mask two to three times a week will surely works wonder!
For Health
- This superfood has anti cancer properties, cures cough and sore throats and promoted weight loss.
- Take 1 teaspoon manuka honey 3 times a day in between meals or make a lemon honey water for a daily detox.
Alternative Sugar
Craving for sweets but on a diet? Honey is also a great alternative for sugar sweetie!
Aside from it's full of vitamins and minerals, a tablespoon of raw honey contains 64 calories and more easily metabolised than sugar.
Conclusion
Is manuka much better than the regular raw honey?
It depends to what you are using it for and how much you are willing to spend. If a powerful natural healing properties and top quality is your preference, then manuka honey is your best pick.
