STEEMNOVA is a fairly simple game,
but there's plenty of ingame content and mechanics to satisfy those who get bored quickly.

One of which.
EXPEDITIONS into deep space are one of more important ones to pursue.

The mechanics of Expeditions aren't very complex.

Simply put,
you delegate part of your fleet and then send them into deep space on an expedition.

In game,
to unlock the Expedition,
A player need to have completed a tech upgrade
known as Expedition Research [duh!]

Depending on the upgrade level the Expedition Research tech reaches,
a player is allowed to send 1 or more Expeditions at the same time.

  • Level 1-3 Expedition Research - 1 Expedition Slot
  • Level 4-8 Expedition Research - 2 Expedition Slots
  • Level 9-15 Expedition Research - 3 Expedition Slots
  • Level 16-24 Expedition Research - 4 Expedition Slots

What exactly is the benefit in dedicating a part of your Fleet into deep space exploration?

There are certain possible scenarios of the Expedition outcomes with fixed probability,
which goes as follows:

  • Finding resources: 32,5%.
  • Finding Dark Matter: 9%.
  • Finding abandoned ships: 22%.
  • Fighting pirates or aliens: 8,4%. Each one more or less half of the time.
  • Losing your fleet in a Black hole: 0,3%
  • The fleet return delays or accelerates: 9%
  • Find nothing: 18,8%

Resource:
Usually the amount of resource found in a particular scenario is kept in a ratio of 3:2:1 of Metal:Crystal:Deuterium
Note: You only find one kind of Resource at a time.

Dark Matter:
Dark Matter is a fairly important resource.
In SteemNova there are only 2 ways of harvesting it.
Passive, you recieve 100 Dark Matter every 6 hours.
Active, randomly on an Expedition.
The primary use for this substance, it is required to hire Officers,
special units which give bonus to our statistics,
such as Resource Production, Energy Suply, Attack Power, Defence Power, Shield Resistance etc.
While most of the time,
Dark Matter found on Expeditions would come in packs of around 150units or 250units,
it can on occasion exceed those values even ten fold.

Abandoned Ships:
Depending on a scenario and the amount and type of ships we delegate on a mission,
we can recieve different number and quality of ships.
Most of the time we will find Light Cargo, Light Fighters, and Spy Probes.
It is not uncommon however,
to bring back from our adventure Battleships.

Pirates/Aliens:
There are various tactics on what ships to delegate on Expeditions.
Because the type of ships the Pirates/Aliens will have in their fleet highly depends on our picks of ships
it is often believed, that the best option is to have one Strong Ship, possibly Planet Bomber, a Spy Probe, and Cargo Ships.
Pirates, and Aliens, will then have 1 Planet Bomber, 1 Spy Probe, and some Cargo ships,
and depending on the Strenght of Pirates, and Aliens we meet, they will have Light Fighters, Cruisers, or Battleships.
The idea is, since Planet Bomber don't have Rapid Fire against our types of ships,
the probability that the enemy wipes out our Expedition is lower.
Therefore, we only lose few Cargo Ships at worst.

Black Hole:
Nobody deserves to lose all their ships in a belly of the beast.
However, there's nothing we can do about it when it happens.

Delayed/Accelerated Return:
While very underwhelming, these events don't really affect the players very much.

Finding Nothing:
Pretty much self-explanatory, ain't it.

By sending as many Expeditions we can, every day,
we can nearly double our Resource,
hire Officers substantially faster,
gain extra meat shields for our star battles.

Always remember to do these.

Sort Order:  

What ships and how many of them is also important. For now (until top 1 player reached 1kk points) it is best to send 100 Heavy Cargo and single but your best military ship.

Why? What happens when top 1 player reaches 1kk points?

expeditions become more profitable, and we will have to send more ships - 150 heavy cargo.

True.
If Expeditions gave the same values at 100.000 Pts, and 10.000.000 Pts, nobody would ever do them in late game.

Here is the report from my first expedition:

"A life-form of pure energy has made all expedition members stare at hypnotic symbols on their screens for several days. When most were finally clear in the head again the expedition had to be cancelled due to a deuterium shortage."

I've been having a great time building my empire.... little things like that make games like this very addicting AND endearing.

Why do send 300? 100 HC is enough = the same profit. Or was it 3 times?
