We have a weird discussion in crypto. Roughly speaking it is between anarchists and adoptionists. We call it that because a better word does not come to mind. The first view interprets the crypto space as something completely independent from financial and political power structures, the second look for adoption of the very same crypto space by regulators and main stream investors. The discussion also has a technical dimension. Scalability is a big issue and the anarchic purity of blockchains comes under a lot of pressure. Master nodes, centralized solutions to some problems - you name it and you will find the fingerprints of control all over the chains. To be continued...
There is something like a pure democracy movement in crypto, a completely P2P reality.
Democracy in the real world has little to nothing to do with this. Time to take a look at what our western democracies are. Close to a majority of people start to believe that who ever is in an elected position is just a representative of the real powers at work. In the USA that is called the Deep State and in Europe people have a lot of fancy names describing the same but are in fact also speaking about a deep state or deep government.
Representative democracy represents special interest. That is the bottom line. Here the big frustration starts. The more centralized a government is, the less power ordinary citizens have to take influence on decision making processes that affect their daily lives. In EU countries already a lot of regional power disappeared in centralized states. Still you will find a lot of movements in Europe that want regional independance because central governments do a lousy job representing their interest. Most notably of course Catalunya. But there are many more. Many people in Belgium would like to split their country in two, in a small country like Holland the North has some feelings of leaving the Dutch Kingdom. The Scots of course are in a 50/50 mood about staying in the united Kingdom and even in Germany there are Bundeslaender that would not mind to seperate from Berlin. Most notably the Bavarians have an undertow of getting away from what they basically look upon as Prussian rule. The EU makes things worse. Countries (nation states) have become dwarfed against the Brussels bureaucracy. National leaders claim all the time: we cannot solve that, it is determined by EU law. To take any influence in Brussels you need to be big and carry a lot of money. For ordinary single citizens it is as good as impossible to reach the bureaucrats that rule them. Interestingly the protest against this system focuses on taking back control within the nation states. The big question: will that be of any help?
What is democracy like in a modern western country? The parties that are electable in basis have exactly the same program and operate exactly the same methods. There is no real opposition. True the populist movements found their way into parliaments, but they are heavily outplayed. The whole state apparatus works against them. Media, officials - and so on. At the same time they embed them in their system and make them meek.
People vote without any chance to change anything by that vote. The yellow vest movement in France seems to reach a point they actually want to topple the government - having a genuine revolution.
We have an opinion... We do not vote, unless it is a referendum. As long as people keep voting political parties they actually only say YES. The establishment does not care what the outcome of an election is, which parties deliver the actors that obey to their scripts. The only reason this year are EU elections again is to get as many voters in as possible. What they will vote is completely irrelevant. What elites want is that people vote and in that way make the existence of the system legitimate. They deliver actors that follow elites orders but say they are speaking on behalf of the people that voted for them...
Democracy actually would work on a blockchain... No parties, just legislative text where you can say yes or no and propose amendments. No politicians on top that can manipulate that or change it in backrooms... It is possible to have a government with just a few care takers executing the outcomes as on chain. It will never happen, but would be possible...
