Ethereum got its own TLD last year. It's fitting because cryptocurrencies became widely recognized after the late-2017 boom when most of the people in blockchain today entered the market. Now it's a prevalent market choice and it's enormous, but Steem has grown smaller over the months.
Will we get to see so much growth that we will be able to have a .steem domain? Steem is THE blockchain of communities, and also have our own ERC20-style tokens, so it would make a lot of sense for us to have a top-level domain.
Imagine if Steem became a mainstream way of setting up all kinds of communities. Maybe .steem wouldn't be enough in that hypothetical far-away future scenario. It would be pretty cool, though.
Depending on how stuff develops and if sister communities to Steem like WhaleShares and BitShares grow enough as well, we could also be seeing other TLD's featuring those well-known cryptocurrency symbols such as .WLS, .BTS, .EOS and who knows how many others.
If they do come out, I hope they're not very expensive :D I want one.

there is Namecoin (.bit) for decentralized DNS, it was one of the first early bitcoin clones and is still a thing. Unfortunately, the .bit TLD was never accepted bei ICANN, because there can be anonymous domain owners and there is no centralized whois database. So you need a DNS client or DNS resolver server that supports the Namecoin blockchain as a bridge.
The same principle could be applied to .steem.

I guess it's more similar to Tor's .onion in that sense. It's sad that ICANN blocked the effort just because it's unregulatable (kinda the point). I wonder what the potential for abuse would be, though.

the potential for abuse is massive, and it's a pity that people abuse such wunderful technology.
I wish there was censorship resistance WITHOUT abusive shit. Dreaming of an internet without censorship and without hate speech.

Hmmm. Sometimes I judge how resistant a system is by how deep the abuse is in the system. If it cannot be brought down despite how disgusting it is, it's pretty resilient and to be trusted!
I've seen that Steemit is very censorable (not Steem but Steemit). The image host and proxies are Steemit's in most cases* and heavily flagged posts get hidden (both greyed out during the flagging and afterwards due to low reputation). If Steemit doesn't want something being seen, it just deletes the images from the servers and hides the links that are inconvenient.
* Busy, Steemit and Steempeak use Steemitimages as their default image CDN. This makes it so that if an image is deleted from the CDN, the original image cannot be seen unless you're accessing the blockchain some other way. I bet Partiko and many other dApps use Steemitimages as well.
It's safer in a "we take care of you" way, but centralised safety is not at all censorship resistant.

you can always use your own condenser or view the raw blockchain...
It's actually good to have the ability to downvote/flag shit content.
That is what curation is for.

the largest is the same type of abuse steem had, domains such as Amazon were taken

I miss namecoin. There is still a dedicated dev team(probably funded by the early times of bitcoin) but a browser such as Brave or Gab needs to add them default for it to really work.

Eth did technically not get their own TLD. They have a partnershipt with .XYZ so that you can connect your ETH address with your .XYZ Domain :)

Eth didn't get it own TLD though...
which oddly is advertised as
Luxury is pricey, but the .luxe domain name extension is not. You can register a .luxe domain name today to help lend your website a traffic increasing aura of high class luxury.
But yes seeing crypto domains would be kinda cool indeed.
But may not.
I for don't want the current DNS. DNS is too centralized. It either should be ENS,Hyperspace,RNS based. Maybe Brave and Gab Browser can include does servcies and decentralize the web!

Hmmmm, decentralized DNS powered by blockchain? And is Luxe owned by another company exclusively and Ethereum just gets a comfy service?
Luxe does sound luxurious and it could get a nice vibe for a product.
