SCHOOL FOR PARENTS: How to help a shy child to socialize

in steempress •  6 years ago  (edited)

We often assume that introverted children, like shy children, who are really concerned about social reasons, have no self-confidence. "Introverted children have a different nervous system than their more sociable peers. Introverts show more positive reactions in a relaxed environment. "But even in difficult conditions, a child can develop social skills and learn to be more comfortable among others To help your child achieve this, parents should follow these recommendations.

Change the way you communicate

Timid children may unknowingly receive messages from their parents that something is wrong with their behavior. When another adult tries unsuccessfully to talk to your child and you say, "Sorry, my child is shy," the child may think that both think that shy behavior is a bad thing. Instead, say: "Now you feel a bit embarrassed." Then you recognize the child's feelings at a particular time and the fact that he does not always feel that way. The child can return to being sociable when he returns home. By accepting the child's feelings, it gives him the opportunity to trust who he really is.

Be open to dialogue

Observe what situations make the child retract in himself. For example, you might ask, "What happened when the neighbor spoke to you? Did you feel uncomfortable? These conversations will help you better understand the child's behavior. Then you can think of ways to solve this situation next time. For example, if a child refuses to greet someone, ask them to greet you with a nod or simply with a smile. This will help the child understand the need for certain actions in relationships with others in school and other areas of life.

Practicing communication

Source
Each person can feel depressed, be in a noisy or unknown environment. Adults can cope with this; But, young children still these skills are not developed. Therefore, they need practice in communication. Try not to involve the child in large groups and do not force him to communicate: this can cause anxiety and a greater lack of willingness to communicate. Start with little: start communication with another child and then encourage him to be included in large groups. Do not be surprised if your quiet child chooses a more extroverted partner as his interlocutors, in this way he will better develop his social skills.

Plan ahead

Think in advance about ways to cope with the child's anxiety. For example, if you go to a friend's birthday and do not know how to behave, say, "Say hello to a friend and congratulate him." You can also rehearse this scene. You can also give your child a toy or game: you can initiate communication with other children. Avoid cases where the child arrives for the last time and will be forced to join the noisy company. Arrive early, and then the new arrivals will approach your child.

Support the child

Source
Children always respond well to positive reinforcement, and their shy child is no exception. If you praise him for his new achievements, he will increase his self-confidence. The promotion must not be material. For example, if you promise him ice cream to talk to a friend, he might think that communication is so unpleasant that they offer encouragement. Instead, praise the child for his success in social life and recognize his achievements. For example, if you're having fun at a party, say, "I see you're having fun." So the child himself will understand that he can communicate with his classmates.

Very useful article. Thanks for sharing!

volunteering can help those who are introverts. My middle child is an introvert and to help her get out of her shell I had her volunteer, we were also lucky enough to be able to send her to summer camp which helped a whole lot.
