How to find/locate your Stolen Mobile Phone?

Having your phone stolen is a frustrating and difficult experience.
Whether you’re at home or travelling abroad somewhere, it’s important that you try as soon as possible to recover the stolen phone.

Nowadays each one of us carries very costly or latest mobile devices which always creates fear in mind that it may be stolen. Each mobile carries a unique IMEI no. i.e. International Mobile Equipment Identity No, which can be used to track your mobile anywhere in the world.

It is possible to track a mobile phone using IMEI—International Mobile Equipment Identity but not from user end but via legal source i.e police station, because they have access to these lost devices.

There are at least 4 different numbers that identify your phone. IMEI is the unique number assigned to your cellphone unit.

IMSI is the unique number assigned to the SIM card inside your phone.
Advertiser Id (iOS) or Advertising Id (Android) is a unique number assigned to you to track your behaviour anonymously (browsing, purchases etc.) and offer you ads to match your interests, and finally, there is your actual phone number. IMEI is used to block the unit in case it gets stolen.

IMSI is always tracked by your cell phone operator as your phone switches between different cell towers and can be triangulated for the position but that data is protected and can usually be accessed only by government agencies with a court order.
Your phone number is assigned to the SIM card (IMSI) by your service provider so the same rules apply as for IMSI.

A Customer Name & Address (CNA) trace reveals the registered name and billing address of the current owner of a given cell phone number.
For the purposes of getting court documents served, identifying a stalker/harasser, etc., this is usually sufficient.
It is, however, possible that the registered owner of a cell number (per Verizon, Sprint, etc.) is not the person now carrying/using that phone.
The owner could give it/loan it to a friend, relative, etc. It can also happen that the cell number’s owner hasn’t provided the carrier with a correct home or business address.
For example, some bad actors will use a P.O. box (not realizing that a good P.I. can also trace that back to a physical address) in an attempt to mask their location.
A “ping” on a cell number is a hi-tech, real-time location, a technique that uses geo-location incorporating cell towers to triangulate the host phone’s current position down to within +/- 100 meters.
Rather than just telling you where your target cell number’s monthly statement is being mailed, a ping fairly precisely pinpoints the longitude and latitude of that actual cell phone at that very moment.

Note down this number anywhere but not in your mobile as this is the number which will help trace your mobile in case of it's stolen.

Text the phone. Even if no one answered when you called your phone, it’s still worth texting it. The thief may eventually change their mind, and decide to return the phone to you, its owner. Send a brief text that provides your contact information and asks for the phone to be returned. If you think it would help, you could also promise a reward to the individual if they return your phone.To do this, you’ll need access to another cell phone. Ask a friend to borrow theirs. If you’re not near a friend, a kind stranger may allow you to borrow their cell phone to text yours.
Take safety measures if you meet to exchange the phone. If someone—whether or not it’s the thief who initially took your phone—agrees to meet with you to give your phone back to you, take safety precautions. Arrange to meet with the individual in a public place—such as a city square or transit station—during daylight hours. If possible, don’t go alone; bring a friend with you for the sake of companionship and safety. Ask your friend to bring their phone, so that they can call the police if anything illicit happens.Even if the individual returning your phone sounds friendly over the phone (or over text), you should still plan to take precautionary measures.
