Route 66 Silver Shields

Route 66 is an iconic American road.
Established in 1926, the highway ran from Chicago, Illinois all the way to Santa Monica, California... passing through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona on the way. Route 66 took on a bit of a mythical quality in the 1930’s. During this time farm families (escaping the poverty created by the Dust Bowl) traveled out west to California via the road. This journey was filled with both loss and hope, and it solidified Route 66’s place in American culture as the Main Street of America and country’s Mother Road.
To honor the road and it’s special place in the American psyche, the Icons of Route 66 silver shield series was created. Each shield is 1oz of .999 pure silver. The “shields” are shaped like classic highway signs and one will be released for each state Route 66 crosses.
The newest shield and fifth in the series is TEXAS.
The Texas shield features Cadillac Ranch a roadside attraction and public art installation located in Amarillo, Texas. The installation is comprised of 10 Cadillacs buried nose first in the ground since 1974. Visitors are allowed to climb on and spray paint the cars.
And the best part about this?
I’VE BEEN HERE!
In 1999 and 2000, I led tours across the United States in a bus. We would spend one night of the tour in Amarillo and would always visit Cadillac Ranch. The day or two before I would buy 10 cans of spray paint. Then on Cadillac Ranch Day I would unleash the tourist upon the cars with the paint. It was always super fun and everyone would be surprised about getting to paint the cars. It was such a unique experience for the groups.
I am really excited for the last four shields in this series because they are finally covering states I have visited.
