Weird Shapes Make Everything Better

in steemsilvergold โ€ขย  5 years agoย  (edited)

OK people, we have bars, rounds, shields and even figure eight shaped coins (well I guess the shields are actually rounds), but there is a new kid on the block.

Meet the TRIANGLE coin!

kl70tgftm4.jpg

๐Ÿ”ผ ๐Ÿ”บ

What the deuce thrice?!!!

OK this coin is THE VERY FIRST triangular bullion coin. It is also THE FIRST IN A SERIES of four coins depicting famous sea wrecks! Issued by Australiaโ€™s Perth Mint, this beauty is 1oz of .999 pure silver. The coin has a limited mintage of just 20,000 and a face value of $1 AUD.

So, the front of the coin (pictured above) depicts the sailing ship the Batavia. This vessel was owned by the Dutch East India company. It was named after the colony Batavia which is modern day Jakarta, Indonesia.

In 1629, the ship was sailed off course by a couple of shady crew members looking to start a mutiny. The men had legal troubles back home. Rather than return to Holland, they hoped to commandeer the Batavia (and the treasures on board), with hopes of beginning a new life elsewhere. Instead, this ship crashed into a reef and sank off of the coast of Western Australia.

Of the 300 plus souls on board, forty died as the ship sank. The rest (which included women and children) made their way to nearby islands to await a rescue. Unfortunately, these islands lacked fresh water. A group of those left stranded set off in a long boat for Batavia (the colony) on a rescue mission. However, lack of water wasnโ€™t the only worry for those left behind!

The original mutineers did not want to be rescued. Instead, they hoped to plunder the remaining riches from Batavia (the ship) after which they would hijack the rescue ship never to return to Holland or the Dutch colonies. These men gathered up what remained of weapons and provisions and began murdering the castaways who opposed their plan. Within two months over 100 castaways had been murdered by the lecherous crew.

When the rescue mission arrived, those responsible for the murders were put on trial. Several were hung on the spot. Two, including a cabin boy, were taken to the mainland of Australia and abandoned. Others were flogged or keelhauled and one man was broken on the wheel!

Back to the coin!

The front of the coin depicts the Batavia on her maiden voyage. Elements from the ship itself (masts, riggings, sails) frame the ship. The name of the ship and the year of her sinking are engraved onto the coin upside down. This is to hint at the sinking to come!

yepd5kodrw.jpg

On the back of the coin we see a small image of Queen Elizabeth II at the apex of the triangle. Below the Queen is the wreckage of the Batavia strewn across the Australian reef. In the foreground are images of the castaways battling one another for survival as the murdering ensues.

This coin is NUTS!

I donโ€™t know that I have any other coin that tells such a story! This is some dark ๐Ÿ’ฉ! Add that to the shape and mini mintage... I am super excited to see the upcoming releases. Plus, having the series limited to just four pieces makes this a very manageable collection.

I love the shape and how dark the history is! I want to read this book now.

This guy used to play Rugby or Australian Rules football or something. But maybe 15 years ago or so he started writing these awesome history books. Of course focused on events important to Australian history. He is a great writer and I often gift his books to my dad and other relatives at Xmas.

Anyway, he wrote a book on these events and I am sure it is great.

Pretty dark history behind them coins!! The Australian mint has all kinds of cool shapes. They know how to make it fun...hehe.

Thanks for bringing us this treasure :)

I was soooooo tempted to buy their 2 figure eight coins last weekend. The stackitis almost lured me in to spending way too much money! Fortunately I got to the checkout on the Perth Mint website and clicked cancel order! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

awwe I hear you on that damn Stackitis!! The figure 8 coins are amazing, like you say, it's easy to get carried away and spend too much with so much variety to choose from. I don't think I would have the strength to cancel order if it's in the basket. I want to get one someday, there are too many things I want right now, the day I can go to the LCS I think my head will explode. My fever is really running high right now and I'm afraid I'm going mad!! Nurse Ravenhill Nurse Ravenhill!! I need help....haha.

I saw a coin the shape of Australia with a colorized landscape scene. It's such a beauty buy $$$ I have been window shopping for it for a year now and it's still there. If I can ever get my hands on it!! I think of you every time I see it cause I know how much you love Australia.

Lechery and treachery on the high seas! Great pick finney ๐Ÿค˜โ˜ ๏ธ

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

I think there are a lot more juicy details to be found out about this event. Something I read mentioned castaways murdering for pleasure. There could be a good slasher film here.

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

Damn! I think you may be on to something. Maybe itโ€™s time to pen your first screenplay ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ‘

As the tide rolled out to sea, so did the blood from Hanzโ€™s first victim. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

A thriller in the making!

Ooooo, I like this coin shiny with a dark side. Price is a bit high so I'll think about it should I see it this side of the border. Thanks @dfinney

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

If there is one person in ssg who would also appreciate a coin with a dark side I knew it would be you. Forget flowers and happy pandas and explorers.... give me mutiny and mayhem!

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

WOW that is a seriously cool coin, or triangle or whatever is the correct term for it LOL

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

It gets all too confusing! Thank god it is a coin, cause silver that isnโ€™t money is called rounds! And my head would explode if this were a triangle round! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

Ohh no I think you just exploded my head with a triangle round or is is a round triangle LOL

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

Holy crap! I thought the Route 66 series had a cool shape. This coin is sweet and a great low mintage. I'll have to keep an eye out for these.

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

I got mine from Bold Precious Metals, but APMEX night have them now. Just donโ€™t break the capsule or youโ€™re screwed! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

The design on that coin is beautiful!!! CONGRATS on an awesome acquisition.
Would it be less beautiful if it was in the form of original coins which is round? Would they sell less of this coin if it was not a triangle? Perhaps. They come up with crazy shapes and forms of coins... square, rectangle, triangle (do you recall the superman coin with a statue of superman on top of the silver round, and they called it a coin).

ย  ยท ย 5 years agoย

If this were round I 100% think it would cost less. At that point it is just another coin with a ship on it. The marketing team at Perth Mint knows how to get all the money. Especially from me!

Now all they need is a wombat coin series and I will be buying from them forever.

Perth Mint has several coins in silver and golds that have regular following every year: Lunar, Koala, Kookaburra and Kangaroo bullion. Their special (and therefore very high premiums) series of birds Swan, Imu, etc. have great following. These are coin collector staples. And then they broke the mold when they issued the rectagular bullion "coin"- and I think this move was to get into the stackers market who preferred bars to coins. But whatever form or shape they come up with, they make sure they are quality products and the strikes are superb. It is worth having Perth Mint silver and gold coins, especially if you are a collector. But I wish they (not only Perth Mint) keep to the round form of a coin, and call the others something else. I think that it is an abuse of the definition of what a coin is. I think that they they have abused the fact they are a government mint and have the ability call the odd shaped silver "coins" and put a monetary face value on them. The US Mint, will call all other non-monetary products "medallions", and all other government mint will only do round coins. And I hope they they won't follow Perth Mints marketing strategy.
