What Silver Bullion Holds Their Value the Most?

in steemsilvergold •  7 years ago  (edited)

I wanted to get any feedback on what silver bullion holds their value the most? So in terms of Eagles, Maple Leafs, China Pandas etc?

For me, I've been pretty disappointed with the premiums holding up for Canadian Maple Leafs. Don't get me wrong, I love Maple Leafs otherwise.

American Silver Eagles are nice, but I feel that with the same design being used year after year their isn't typically a huge increase in premiums. Although a major plus with ASE is they are one of the most recognizable coins around. So if SHTF they will probably be the easiest to barter with.

Next I like the Lunar Series. These coins, while having a pretty large premium, seem to increase in value ever year.

Next is the Chinese Pandas. These are one of my favorites to collect. Although the premium is also pretty high on these, their value seems to increase every year as well.

Any thoughts or feedback on other coins that are the best to collect?

My experience is that: Generics; don't expect premiums to go up. If the price of silver doubles, the premium may not. If the silver price stays stagnant/the same, several years later, the, say Libertad, can double in price for several reasons. A few years ago, I was debating on either getting 7 generics or 5 Congo Gorillas .999 one oz., for $100. The Gorillas were the better investment, in dollar terms. But if SHTF, or does not, it may come down to weight. As a coin collector, I would rather have 9 different interesting coins, than ten of the same thing. Bottom line, if SHTF, the price will be spot price, for the disparate. But these Disparates, will still be in a better position than they may realise.

But silver prices are so low, I draw the line at $20. I will go $20 for a $30 (retail) over a $17 Genaric, in a heartbeat. But maybe not on a $20,000 vs $17,000 deal. Depends on whether you love the coin or love the dollar.

My feeling, you pay the premium once, on "common" premium pieces (eagles, maples, etc). You will get that same premium in return, regardless of spot price. I have many $7.00 ASE's that people frowned on when silver was $3.50/oz. Other than low mintage years, average ones will still bring that same $3-$4 premium at $50 spot.

If anything, premium coins hurt you when spot increases dramatically. If someone wants an ounce of gold at $1850 spot....they will think harder about the $1910 eagle than the $1865 bar.

Good points. Thanks for your input!

I'll second the Libertads holding somewhat of a premium at least from what I've seen because I believe their total mintage each year is pretty low as compared to ASE or Maples.

Other than that I'm not really sure, maybe Britannias?

Thanks. Yeah, I like Britannias a lot too. I need more of them😀

You and me both! They almost always have a higher premium than ASE when I'm ordering from an online dealer and I don't know that I've ever seen them at my favorite bullion dealer, so I never can buy as many as I would like!

Libertad resell for a premium here, I think that descent ungraded "junk silver"is the best for holding premiums. And any time you can get vintage mint bars and rounds it's good, as they tend to grow premium over time.

I agree...I'll swap common date ASE's for Libertads most days.

But, if I show an average "non stacker" an ASE and a 1 oz bar that's easily ID'd (Johnson Matthew, E, etc) they will generally pick that in a barter situation. Something about those conventional shaped bars, with easy to read .999's. Non collectors like'em. They "look valuable".

True! Thanks for your feedback.

Good points! Thanks for the feedback!

Best bang for your buck is a 10oz 9999 RCM bar. No premiums, all 9999 silver, all fucking day long.

I like this!

I love gold and silver especially coins.
For me personally my stacking is purely cold and hard financial. So for me mainly eagles and maples.
That doesn't stop me From occasionally bathing in them ; -)

It depends if you are looking to preserve the premium amount or appreciate it. ASE's would be my choice to just preserve it. I think the premiums are too high on the Lunars and the mintage on Pandas are too high and there are to many fakes out there.

My choice is Kangaroo's. If you buy them shortly after they are on the market, their premium is about the same as an ASE, the mintage is much lower, and they tend to increase in value.

I love the new Kangaroos too. Good price usually too, good choice...I forgot them.

I actually meant Kookaburras! D'Oh! Though I love the 2015 Kangaroos.

Lol...kookaburras, kangaroos, same difference. 😁

my own experience unfortunately is one of which , the eagles do hold more value for now, I personally love the Maples, but when I needed to make some cash, the only ones that got me out of the jam were the eagles, they paid more.
Things can and will change, but for whatever reason the ASE coins hold value better.
But with that said also, I do love the Pandas, the lunar series and many others, so it comes down to get what you really like, and low mintage, and you cannot go wrong.

Thanks. You're right low mintage is important!
