# 463 - Moscow Olympic Coins - Part 1

in steemsilvergold •  5 years ago  (edited)

The Games of the XXII Olympiad were held in Moscow, USSR in 1980.

Led by the United States, 66 countries boycotted the games entirely because of the Soviet–Afghan War. The Soviet Union would later boycott the Summer Olympics that would be held in Los Angeles, USA in 1984.

We will show now several coins that were emitted to commemorate this event.

Let's start with the 1 Ruble coins. They are made of copper-nickel-zinc and weight 12.8 g each.

The first is a 1977 1 Ruble showing the Games Emblem.

The second is a 1978 1 Ruble showing the Moscow Kremlin with stars on top of steeples.

Both obverses show the coat of arms of the Soviet Union.

A very nice set @ronaldoavelino. Do you know how many were made?

These coins were made for circulation, but a small amount were Proof and put into sets like the above. I could only find the mintage of the circulating ones (a little more than 8,000,000 for the first and a little more than 4,000,000 for the second) but nothing about the proof coins mintage.

That should be a very interesting series. I never saw any of the coins about this Olympiad.
