Texas Commemorative Silver Half Dollar and 1 POUND Replica

in steemsilvergold •  6 years ago  (edited)

On one of my very early YT videos I showed a video of a 1 pound (14.58ozt) silver round commemorating Texas' 150 years of Independence from Mexico.

Soon after posting the video some viewers mentioned to me that I should get the half dollar. At the time I didn't know one existed. I had assumed the pound was designed for Texas' Sesquicentennial. Turns out it was a replica of the Commemorative Half dollar minted 50 years earlier for Texas' Centennial.

I looked into the prices and they were just too rich for my blood. Eventually I found a pretty good deal at a coin show when I happened to be carrying enough fiat to make the deal and not feel like a sucker.

And here she is:

The lighting isn't great in here.

I prefer video because you can catch the subject at different angles. For instance the shield behind Sam Houston's face is hard to make out on this pic, but the detail is there. The coin will make it onto my YT eventually.

That should do it. Here's the vid of the Pound Round:

Nice Texas half dollar. I specialize in Classic Commemorative half dollars. I believe I was the one to inform you of your round's connection to the Texas half dollar. Texas half dollars were made from 1934-1938. I own a 1936-D Texas half dollar. Texas half dollars retail for $195 in MS65 condition. Texas half dollars are considered a BARGAIN in today's prices. In 1989, Texas half dollars were selling for $700. The Texas half dollars really dropped in value over the decades.

Great info. Thanks for the resteem buddy!

I'd have preferred a 1936, the Centennial was in 1936, hehe... my Half is a year early. I got this coin for $165. The guy was a little mad. Said he paid $160 for it. He told me the table for the 3 day long coin show cost him $500. Wow! How's a guy supposed to make any money? Lol... He didn't HAVE to sell it to me, but he may have just wanted to generate some cash flow.

The tables at coin shows cost a lot of money to rent. Dealers try to sell off as much inventory possible at coin shows. That's why there's a lot of deals at coin shows. I agree, he probably wanted to get some extra cash from the coin. When buying slabbed coins at coin shows, it's best to get a Grey Sheet. The Grey Sheet is the most respected price guide on US coins. Grey Sheet is the nickname of the Coin Dealer's Newsletter. Be sure to check out my Russian gold video on YouTube!

That’s awesome brother! Holy crap that’s a lot is silver. 👍🏼🍺🥓

Thanks for checkin out the post my friend. Preesh!

Hello, my friend! Why do you obscure the NGC number? Many people do this but I could not find the why...

My grandmother always cut off the ends of the ham when she would cook it. My mother would always cut off the ends of the hams when she would cook it. I assumed it had something to do with juices going out or spices getting in.

My grandmother's cousin still lives in the old country, no phone or internet. I travelled there to solve the mystery.... it took thousands of dollars and days of travel. Finally I met my grandmother's cousin, they grew up together, surely she would know. I asked, "Why do we cut the ends off of the hams?"

The answer was, "Because the pan your great grandmother would use was too small..." The ham wouldn't fit, so she had to trim it.

The moral of the story is, sometimes we don't know why we do things, lol... just do them that way because that's the way they've always been done.

People cover up the certification # because of security. People can look up the number on NGC's website
