Exhibit A: Technically, that's plundering or pillaging? The spoils of conquest. 'Theft' suggests some degree of stealth. :P

As Eddie Izzard said, they did it with the cunning use of.. flags. "Do you have a flag? No flag, no country. It's ours now!"
