A near perfectly struck 1/10 ounce gold eagle

Just down the road from me about 20 minutes away is cool store call Antiques & Oddities. In addition to the standard stalls of antiques they have a huge selection of, "oddities" such as Tibetan trample doors or Chinese apothecary cabinets like these.

In talking to one of the owners I found out that the other owner of the shop spends half of the year over in Europe and Asia filling a big, portable storage container. Once full they ship it over to the states and start making money.

Now they do have a tray of generic silver rounds but they are all priced at $25 each so, no thanks. However they did have this 1/10 ounce gold eagle.

As you can see this one is a special (or is it) "first day of issue" coin.

I snapped a couple photos and it is a beautifully stuck coin as you can see. The details are amazing on this little guy.

Not sure why the photos make it look differently colored on either side. It was the same color on both sides, obviously.

It comes in a wood box display box with a window in it, this COA, and a $200 price tag!

My question to you is; Is this really worth $200? It is well over the $140 that apmex is charging for a random year BU coin.

Are these "first day of issue" or "first strike" graded coins just a gimmick? As nice as this coin looks I don't think I could justify that much of a premium, could you?

@summertooth it is a beauty, however the grading is pretty much null and void when you go to any real dealer. The reason is they only acknowledge and for good reason really PCGS and NGC. The others are not the best in practices. Thanks for sharing and man I love the design of those coins.

Yeah, thanks for the info Dwing!

what a lovely store!! the gif is funny and coin is a beauty. i felt the same when i went into a not as nice pawn shop in denver. same price approx 8 months ago.

As nice as it is I just could not justify paying that much (like I even had that much to spend!)
:)

I'll have ten!

No kidding Mike. I have held one other 1/10 ounce gold eagle in my hand and it does not compare to the beauty of this MS70!

Ok, so you didn’t buy the gold.... but did you get a door? 🚪

☺️

I wish. Some of those doors cost as much as 5 house payments! I did get a beautiful drive through the gorge though.

its a bit pricey look online and you can find a ngc or pcgs one for a better deal I'm thinking but just to make you giggle I seen a pawn shop wanting $259 for an ungraded one needles to say I'm no longer welcome there

Baaahaha, I can only imagine you getting kicked out of a pawn show for laughing in their face! :)

Graded coins have not done well in the past 20 years. They are at the lowest premium to spot I've ever seen. If you are going to buy graded coins, I'd go with pre-1933 coins and don't pay more than 10-15% over spot. There's lots of deals to be had out there, this isn't one of them.

Thanks for the tip @matthewwarn.

...and I only buy NGC coins...the other grading companies are shady AF.

My favorite type of store!!

Oh dude, the stuff they have in this store is amazing! Vintage Tibetan temple doors are just unreal. I spent so much time just looking at stuff and wondering about where it's been. Amazing.

In my opinion no, no dealer will take that coin as an MS70.

Wow, really? What would it take for an MS70? I mean this one looks very nice.

If it’s not PCGS or NGC dealers wont recognize the grade. MS70 means flawless, you can’t tell without a loupe.

I understand, it did seem like a gimmick with the case and that COA. Thanks again professor 510!

The reason why it came with all of that stuff was because it was sold on The Home Shopping Network. They used that bullshit grading service and used to charge through the nose for them. Because they read first day issue.
