X Cash Coin

Click-bait title engaged! :)

Am I talking about the hottest new crypto on the market? Or another airdrop? NO! I am talking about the East India Company x Cash coin.

image
🔝This is the reverse of the x cash coin featuring a Persian inscription giving the coins value in India.

image
The obverse, not in such good condition, features a coat of arms awarded to the East India Company by the English Crown in 1698

These East India Company coins are purported to be the first in the world struck on a steam driven coin press. They were minted in Birmingham, England at the Soho Mint, owned by Matthew Boulton. I'm sure some of you may know this but Boulton and his former business partner James Watt, were among 5he earliest pioneers in the development of the steam engine.

This particular coin was one of many on board the Admiral Gardner when it wrecked and sank in 60 feet of water on the Goodwin Sands in the English Channel on January 25th, 1809. Seven men lost their lives less than 4 miles from the shore.

If you are not familiar with the Goodwin Sands, it is a treacherous bank of sandbars just off the English Coast and had the nickname, "The Shipswallower"

When it went down it had a cargo of anchors, cannonballs, copper ingots, iron bars and a shipment of new copper coins. The 1808 X Cash coin. This payload, unlike the Spanish treasure galleons filled with gold and silver, was deemed not worthy of the risk and effort of salvage, and remained undisturbed on the seabed for 176 years. She was discovered in 1984 and the payload salvaged in 1985.

I picked this coin up when I was visiting New Orleans in 2012 as a gift for my son. This may be the first coin of my stacking career! :)

Have a great week!

Really cool coin with some history.

Yeah it is, and I bought it before I was an official stacker.
Gateway coin?

Gateway coin. HAHAHA. The first one is free, then you're hooked.

A very beautiful story, that serves to reinforce the saying: "Coins are History in your hands".

So true @ronaldoavelino. Funny that one of the most interesting things about a physical coin is near invisible history, the "I wonder where" & "what if".

That's an awesome story. I was reading about that wreck a few weeks ago. I had seen some X Cash coins for sale online and I wanted to know more about them. That's cool you were able to get one!

Yeah, crazy it was in only 60 feet of water for 176 years!! I just looked online because @knowledge-seeker was asking and I found an NGC Certified coin for $45. Hmmm

Hey, that's not bad for something that was part of a shipwreck. It's strange that some of the coins weren't brought up because they didn't feel it was profitable. Hold your breath or take a breathing tube, and get down there, son! Ha ha.

Neat history, love the story behind the coin. I need to track one down for my collection.

Good luck, hope to see you blog about it sometime. Thanks for stopping in @mericanhomestead.

Very cool!

The King! Rock on brother!

you know the last part of the story might be the whole story to some most awesome indeed

Thanks Corn to the Dogg!

I have a brother that would love something like this. I may have to look one of these up. Are they expensive coins or mainly collectors pieces?

I got it in a collectibles shop I went in looking for gifts for my kids when I was visiting New Orleans and I can't remember the price but I think it was in the teens of $. Check out this beauty on eBay.

Hope you have a good week Seeker!

Real cool story there brother. There is probably more gold and silver buried out to see then what's available above ground currently.

You are probably right, and that thought is blowin' my mind up!!

A better ending to this story would have been, “Here I am on a dive retrieving this coin straight from the seabed.”

Very cool coin.☺️

Thanks @dfinney. You couldn't get me to put on scuba gear and go underwater for anything.

ANYTHING?!! 🤔 💭

  • One of your many kids?
  • Free tickets to Midnight Oil at a small to moderately sized concert venue?
  • Hockey night at Wayne’s house? Just you, Wayne and a plate of Uncle Dan’s salmon cakes?

OK @dfinney, you got me, there may be something

  • There is at least one that I would go after.
  • No, wet tickets would be ruined
  • Hmmmm, served by Uncle Dan?
