2019 Steem Silver Round - redrawing @welshstacker's designsteemCreated with Sketch.

Yesterday, I read a post by @welshstacker asking for some help with their entry for this year's #steemsilverround.

I'm actually kind of disappointed I missed the initial contest, but I like @welshstacker's design so I thought I'd help out and redraw the design as a vector on the computer; mostly the iPad. There were some adjustments that needed to be made from the initial design, and I did my best to implement them, as much as I could. I deviated from the initial layout a little bit with regards to the fish being their own border, because I didn't think it blended well with the pheonix. So, I moved the fish to the spacers for each community word instead. I also moved the 2019 between the head and the wing because after I enlarged the pheonix I couldn't get the 2019 to blend right. Now it's being engulfed by the rising pheonix so there is some symbolism to why I put it there; aside from that being a big open space. The full circular wings on @welshstacker's design are really awesome and I think the pheonix looks best as big as possible.

Initially, I only posted the initial coin as a comment on their post to see if it was usable. I'm guessing it is, because there was a whole post about it when I woke up this morning.

So, I found some more free time today and smoothed out the design a little more. I focused on every point and every curve to smooth it out and make sure everything flowed nicely. The first pass tracing the initial drawing was just a quick trace of @welshstacker's design. It looks a lot smoother now that I've gone over it again and paid attention to every curve.

I also took some time and refined the fish around the border. I had to drop a 'POBAIL' to make more room for the fish without sizing the text, but it doesn't look so crowded now. Sorry POBAIL you were the shortest word.

Edit: Fixed a spelling mistake

So now the questions.

If you were going to buy this as this year's silver round, and I know you want to, what would you like to see changed?

Are the fish or text too big, too small, or need adjusting?

Should the text be different?

Should the border be bigger or smaller?

Should I make the text smaller and fit POBAIL back in there?

Let's here it.

The Welsh translation for community is spelt wrong.

Oh no! I'll fix that today. Anything else you see that you'd like different? It's your design, after all.

Impressive changes @stephen.king989

You did an awesome job. I quite like it.

Hey @stephen.king989 I really like what you have done with Welshstacker's design. If you had the free time, could I get you to take a look at my design? I tried to make it in Adobe Illustrator, but I am not sure how to make it look this good. Thanks

I wish I had the time to get into it for you, but unfortunately, I don't right now - especially with only a few days left before the deadline.

If you have Illustrator already, you're all set, just design it in black and white only - black being the raised layer and white being the flat layer. That's all I did for this one. When I was finished I just added a 3D effect and some gradient fills to get the shine appearance but that isn't really important. I just did it for practice. It's the black and white design that's important in the end.

Looking at your design, though, it looks like you might run into a problem where the lines connect to the stars. Because there can only be two layers, if you raise the stars and the lines, they will blend together and it makes the stars look strange and not star-like. Making the stars hollow as you've done and have the middle on the flat layer works, but you're running into issues I think with the smaller stars. Maybe make the lines thinner as the stars get smaller to keep the shape in the middle so that star is still recognizable.

If you re-color your design with black only some other areas to fix might present themselves, but it will make the design look a lot sharper if you can sort them out. Also, for the text and the single stars, I'd get rid of the outline completely and just fill them black. The text will appear much clearer without an outline.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I absolutely understand. I can play around with Illustrator and see if I can try a few of the things you mentioned above. You have given me a lot of things to think about and it is greatly appreciated. Thanks @stephen.king989!
