"No one is born hating another person because of the color of their skin, or their origin, or their religion, people have to learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can also be taught to love"
Nelson Mandela
"Do not judge me by my successes, judge me for the number of times I fell and I got up again"
Nelson Mandela
"You will achieve more in this world through acts of compassion than through acts of retribution"
Nelson Mandela
"Death is something inevitable, when a man has done what he thought necessary for his people and his country, he can rest in peace, I believe that I have fulfilled that duty, and therefore I will rest for eternity."
Nelson Mandela
Today, July 18, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, a South African lawyer, activist, politician and philanthropist who fought throughout his life against social inequality and institutionalized racism.
In 1944 Mandela joined the African National Congress and was committed to resistance against the apartheid policies of the ruling National Party for many years until he was arrested in August 1962.
Madiba, as he was called by those who appreciated him the most, remained imprisoned for more than 27 years, during which his reputation as a powerful symbol of resistance for the anti-apartheid movement grew steadily.
- Released in 1990, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and was invested as the first democratically elected president in South Africa in 1994.
