Mind Destroyers # 1: Psilocybin.
Since I carried out the research for the elaboration of my previous post Scientific approach: What really makes us addicted?, I was very impressed with the whole mechanism of drug consumption, from the ingestion to the almost infinite number of substances that exist. And not to mention the human brain and its extreme complexity.
That is why from this post I would like to elaborate a small series where I will try as much as possible to expose some of the strangest substances and mechanisms that affect the functioning of the brain.
Don't do it?
But thank your lucky stars that half the world's great minds did do it? Artists, musicians, philosophers have all benefited from hallucinogens (not necessarily psilocin but from the same shelf on the medicine cabinet, eh?).
May I ask, have you actually taken them, @ideas-abstractas? If you've never taken them or a similar hallucinogen then you're hardly in any position to denounce them as you seem to be willing to do, imho. Though, if you beg to differ here, I could understand that. Lots of people have views on things they have zero knowledge of. You'd hardly be the first, therefore.
I've taken them many a time. They're quite amazing. You see things differently. The effects - ALL positive if you ask me - will in some cases last a life time, I'd imagine. Again, hardly a bad thing.
Obviously, if you're thinking of doing them, you should know what you're getting into (common sense, though, really?). If you pick libs fresh, be sure not to pick the wrong mushroom. If you're not 100% IDing a particular specimen, throw and move onto inspecting the next.
Know your limits. Don't have 500 on your first go. Never have 500 even? But 30/40 on your first go, should give you a nice buzz (no real hallucinations). 60-100 will take you places.
The great thing about them is you can practically fine-tune your dose (unlike an LSD tab where you really are at the mercy of a dealer). Take x and you're happy, fantastic. The effects aren't enough for you? Take an extra pinch. Too many - you'll probably need a friend to talk you down and they say great things about vitamin C (ie. drink juice).
The amount contained per individual lib varies and you must bear this in mind. Size, age, condition will all affect the active ingredient levels.
Stick to the big juicy ones that look great and you should be alright.
Just please don't take my word for it.
TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I must point out the 'libs' I refer to are liberty cap mushrooms, Psilocybe semilanceata. You can't go wrong with these. Mother nature made them very distinctive. For a reason, some might argue.
Mind destroyers, lol. SMFH Mind expanders, more like.

Nicely stated @zool237, as a fan myself, thank you for standing up so eloquently for the Shroom 🕉 .
There is indeed 'truth' (small 't') in the title of this post, in that it can help to destroy the ego mind LOL, that same illusion-based thinking that dismisses the possibility of true healing in favour of (presumably non mind-altering) Big Pharma and the pseudo-scientific babbling of a mind utterly fearful of knowing itself and looking inside.
This post speaks with such authority although the information seems cherry picked, imprecise and there is no corresponding space of personal experience from which to speak... this begs the question "wtf are you writing about something you have no clue about?"...but hey, we need to be policed for our own good right?
If 'medical' purpose is to perpetuate 'sickness' through use of BigPharma junk, then of course the above is a sound statement LOL2. But hey, let's just dismiss all plant-based healing in one sweeping sentence (in favour of yummy chemicals?)!
I found balance to the unbalanced expression on this page in reading your words, and here I am 6 months later, adding my 2p worth of satire. I do not need to react further to the ignorance and judgmentalism in this post, although I'd be happy to give my reasons to the author (should you ever read this and wish to ask).
There are some gems that ring true though. This for example:
...exactly how I felt, and still feel, although the two 'worlds' are now, with age and experience, drawing together somehow (author, if you're reading this, feel free to take it as a sign of certain insanity LOL - I really don't hate you btw :).
Catch you around Zool, the season is upon us, happy hunting 🔆

Thanks for the reply. It's been a while and it's always a pleasant surprise when an old comment piques someone's interest encouraging them to comment. You're quite right about them being 'ego destroyers'. They're very humbling and in this chaotic world we live in, it's hardly the worst thing a person can do - bringing himself down a peg or two. We don't want too much introspection but it in the right doses lots of good can come from it.
The above post was just plain silly as well, wasn't it? (I don't think I gave it the response it deserved 6 months ago). You could argue we're all at different points on the mental health continuum and with time and circumstances an individual's point on that particular piece of string can vary greatly. The effects of microdosing hallucinogens is being researched as a potential treatment for depression. So, they look like they are being recognised to have medicinal purposes.
Happy hunting to yourself. I'm trying to go every weekend, now, but as I'm newish to the area, I've still to get lucky (I'm from north-west England but moved to the south-east twenty months ago). I'm sure I'll stumble upon a field-full sooner or later.

Maybe the author will have altered perception in the intervening six months :)
I actually stumbled upon your post when looking through various tags to include in a post I'm about to publish about the 'hunt' (not successful this time :).... but a friend who has been more diligent has over 100. This is the very start (at least in Scotland, SE England maybe a bit later?).
Hmmm a diagonal shift right across the country - hope you find your fields, shame the no 'no-trespassing' laws don't apply as they do in Scotland :)

You are right I have never consumed any hallucinogenic, however, I respect the decision of each person to consume what they want.
For me, the main thing is to take care of the integrity of my mind, for that reason I prefer to nourish it instead of wearing it down bit by bit, subjecting it to processes that are not used to it, nor that is natural.
You are right, great minds have consumed hallucinogens to release creativity or even revolutionary ideas. But that does not imply that it is fundamental to create something.
I appreciate your point of view and opinion as someone who has experienced hallucinations.

Pass me those mushrooms if you don't want them.... ;)

Well said sir! I've also taken them a couple times with positive experiences. I would advise first timers that they should surround themselves with people they love & trust and of course in a safe environment.

wow 8 hours is a lot of time to have an active effect!
I have never tried any type of hallucinogen although I have always been curious about what type of things would I see after using them. Still, since I don't enjoy messing with my brain I have remained firm with my decision of avoiding all of this stuff.

Yes, 8 hours so imagine everything that could go through the mind of a person at that time. Being out of control of your mind is something that generates a lot of concern. As you say I prefer to have my mind fresh and without subjecting it to strange things.

More like 4 or 5 hours, depending on the dose. Take multiple doses through the night and next day (for example) and why let the good times end? But that's multiple doses. Just make sure you've enough things to keep you entertained. Music / art / other people / a lover ;) ;) ;) (I lie about the last bit, you really wouldn't be able to do much whilst peaking and even when coming down it can be more than a little weird).

Nice article. Well done! I would add that psilocybin is actually a pro-drug. It is converted to psilocin (dephosphorylated psilocybin) when ingested: (see: Psilocin) and its the resulting psilocin that is the psychoactive compound. "Psilocin has structural similarities that it shares on a molecular level with the neurotransmitter serotonin, which enables it to interact with a range of serotonin receptor sites throughout the brain that are integral for sensory and cognitive processes."
