Fermi Energy

"The maximum energy occupied by an electron at 0°k is Fermi energy."

Basically it's a concept in quantum mechanics .The energy of the highest level of quantum state is Fermi energy .For describing and comparing the behaviour of different semiconductors the concept of Fermi energy is really useful. During the conduction process, only electrons that have an energy that is close to that of the Fermi energy can be involved in the process.

Fermi Level

By Pauli Exclusion principle we know that electron will full all available energy levels and top of the energy level is the Fermi level. The electron in the Fermi level forms Fermi Sea.

The Fermi Level is the energy level corresponding to the energy required to remove an electron from the semiconductor.

Significance of Fermi Level:

  1. Fermi level is a material property that is related to the contribution of charge carriers that contribute to the electrical conduction .
  2. Fermi level determines the energy required to remove an electron from semiconductor .
  3. The position of Fermi level is important for determining electron & hole concentrations.
