An oddity in my mind... Another fireside chat!

When I was a young boy in elementary school I was forced to choose which hand I would write with. My teacher seemed to think that being ambidextrous was a bad thing. I don't know why, but she made me choose. I asked her which one everyone else uses and she said the right hand. So I chose my right hand. In order to stay with the one hand, I had to sit for hours on my left hand. Both hands were just as apt to work on the same project at the same time. It wasn't until I became an adult that I looked back and realized that I had been misled.

In school gym time, I could switch hit during baseball season, I still can switch hit. When I was learning to drive I had to plant my left foot on the floor of the driver's side so that I wouldn't use both feet on the controls. Apparently that is a faux pas when driving. What I've found out since then is it's very common to use both feet when driving, I don't, but I know I can. When I'm writing, part of my brain is asking why I don't use both hands to write, like when I use a keyboard. We live in a very complicated world full of rules that do not make sense.

I still feel this urge to use both hands when working on projects and both feet when driving. The driving thing I have under control, but writing, making art and cooking I feel this need to use both sides of my brain. So I feel as though I was taught improperly in early childhood. I've spent the last decade unteaching myself certain things and reteaching myself how to use my whole brain, both hands and feet. I realize now that I should've been given a drum set. I would've done well with that at an early age, if anyone had cared enough to examine me closely. I remember asking my father for a drum set and he said no because he didn't like the noise.Oh well, maybe next lifetime. Until then, I will continue to improve my skills in my natural ability to use both hands at the same time when writing and drawing.
