A group of butterflies went to California, and another group further south again, that is, to Mexico. What is interesting is that all the king's butterflies meet each other along the way, as if they had received the same command from a single source, and then together went on their way to their destination. The beginnings of the king's butterfly migration have also been planned on the basis of the same time reference. They do not start the journey on any given day, but on one particular day in autumn, the autumunal equinox, the time when day and night have the same length of time.
After flying for two months, they finally arrive in the warm forests of the south. Millions of butterflies cover the trees, and for four months, from December to March, they live in this place without eating anything. They are able to survive with the fat stored in the body and only drink water.
