Silence Speaks Volumes Of Words: How Much Do You Embrace It?

Silence speaks volumes of words that a million wrecklessly thrown words do not speak. There is, in silence, something next to holiness.

When we open our mouths to speak, it is wise to engage first the gear of reason before blutting out anything that comes to your mind. If you have nothing to say, then do not say your nothing here.

My mother told me that if I have nothing wise to say, then I should keep silent.

A child in school where I was teaching once told me these. We should speak wise words. Many people enjoy throwing abuses at others. Every word that ensues from the mouth is an abuse in nature.

"How are you?" Asks a person innocently.

Are you a doctor to determine how I am? Why do you give me a doctor's examination? Will you even manage my problems even if I tell you how I am?

What a tirade of words! Just answering 'fine' will have saved much breath. Why a thousand words creating annoyance when all you needed was one answer word. Silence will have solved that problem.

• What Can We Decipher From Silence?

There is much one can decipher from silence. Silence talks. It heals broken hearts. Just by keeping silent.

• Wisdom

A silent person is wise. He listens to every talk. He examines all statements. He observes your eyes. He can pick a lie from truth. When he finally opens the mouth to say words of wisdom, they are few and powerful.

This is a great verse. It teaches us that together with wisdom, a silent person is wise and Godly.

• Meditation

In silence, there is a meditating individual. A meditating indivividual has reason. He is responsible for his words and action.

When you meditate, you move in spirit. Hidden and concealed things do come to your mind and you see beyond human perspective. From such informed stance, you give correct judgement and informed answers.

As gold purified in a furnace loses its impurities and achieves its own true nature, the mind gets rid of the impurities of the attributes of delusion, attachment and purity through meditation and attains Reality

• Judgement

In silence there is sound judgement. Character, wisdom and love can be judged in silence. As you talk, there is a listener. He sees through you, translates every gesture and knows what effect you seek with your words.

A judge is a finality to your words

When one is arrested, he is warned that whatever he talks may be used as evidence against them. In other words, you are told to be silent or talk only with your attorney present.

Silence can cool and heal quarrels

Silence is serenity and brings tranquility. It is holy and sacred. It stops fights and nurtures sobreity. We should talk less and listen more.

Prayer is talking to God. Communication is complete if there is response to all the supplications. A good prayerful person is one who listens to God too. You can be silent to hear God's voice.

We sit silently and watch the world around us. This has taken a lifetime to learn. It seems only the old are able to sit next to one another and not say anything and still feel content. The young, brash and impatient, must always break the silence. It is a waste, for silence is pure. Silence is holy. It draws people together because only those who are comfortable with each other can sit without speaking. This is the great paradox.
