The Dilemma that is the IntroduceYourself section in Steemit. WE NEED A FIX!

in stemmit •  7 years ago

What can we do about the Introduceyourself thread Steemians? How can we make it better?

I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately because, as the alt-coins rise, more and more people are going to find their way to this platform. There was been a continuous influx of new users here since I've started only a few months ago. (Steemit veterans roll your eyes, I know, newbie) Anyway, word of mouth combined with the crypto rise is going to bring a lot of people here. When they begin to browse the site, they will surly navigate to the introduce yourself section to see how new members are received. Right now, it isn't very inviting.

The page is filled with spam posts. Users with low reputation that plagiarize articles or ones that have extremely low quality. Just take a gander at the thread anytime and you'll catch my drift. There is also an abundance of posts that have nothing to do with introduction at all. This is a issue in a lot of threads, but is especially prevalent in this one. There are a bunch of thirsty people looking for quick upvotes in this category and in my opinion are really ruining it for new users. Yes, slightly hypocritical that this will show up in the introduceyourself thread, but whatever, I just want the section to get better, and everyone that wants this platform to have a healthy growth should too.

I see great introductions with just a few upvotes all the time and it makes me mad! Great posts, crafted with care and opening themselves up to the Steemit community, and they are under rewarded. Users new introductions are pushed down in the feed by unrelated or low quality posts, which makes the good ones difficult to find.

The Vision

I think it is fairly straightforward the ideal feed desired for the introduceyourself section. One where it is overwhelmingly users who are just creating their first post and greeting themselves to the Steemit family. One where posts are upvoted and commented on generously, because the first impression is the most important. We don't want to create a false sense that every post might be rewarded as such, but sometimes it is a little nerve racking to first put yourself out there and a little encouragement can go a long way for new users. I myself try to spend a good amount of time and upvotes on new users because I know how received I felt with even a couple upvotes or comments on my first post.

When new users visit this thread now and get some of their first glance at the community, it is underwhelmingly compared to what it could be. Imagine if the introduction section was filled with great new users that each got a buck or two in rewards!? How encouraging would it be to see troves of comments from existing users, instead of only a couple generic ones? Right now maybe 1 out of 5 or 10 is a introduction. Were better then that!!!

So lets get at it Steemit! Take a portion of your time and dedicate it to the new users. Swing some upvotes into the introduction section. Post some comments to make people feel welcomed! Flag the accounts that abuse the section regularly and lets present a better face to the incoming/future steemians that will help propel this platform!

The Solution Struggle

The solution above is only a start, the questions remain how to expand it and keep it going. The core of the debate tugs at the very core of Steemit being a decentralized social media where you can post and share anything. What interference's or corrections, if any, should be accepted within the community? Should there be dedicated users that are able to remove introduceyourself tags from posts that don't belong there. How would that even be decided and could it be abused? Should there be rapid flagging? And if those are implemented then is that a form of censorship on the platform. Where does the slippery slope go from there? I guess I don't have the answers.

Have you heard about my page @welcoming where I resteem promising, real intros? It was made due to the things you said! Check out more details here: https://steemit.com/steemit/@theaustrianguy/welcome-welcoming-an-account-for-manual-introduceyourself-curation
Greets!

I didn't know about this either! But it's great work by you.
Is it a manual process for you?

Yes, everything done manual ;) You can bet I check for identity theft, etc. Already reported a lot to @steemcleaners! Hoping to see you upvote some of @welcoming 's resteems and jumping on it's follower list! Greets!

Absolutely! Since introduceyourself is such a mess, I will absolutely support your efforts in @welcoming ! You do a great service to us all kind sir!

No I haven't heard, but that is great! I was thinking that could also be a solution, to have an account that resteems and I see you were already on it. Yah, this is great, thanks for doing this!

Exactly that was the idea ;) Hope to see you follow it and vote on some minnows! Announcements about the service will be made on my main account! Greets!

Will do for both!

Great :)

Exacly . You wrote it all right. I stell feel that newcomers th at is n ot a thech people do not very interesting for the community. On top of that english is my secon language and it feels that peole will be more irrateited than happy to see my posts.

@diezeldiddy, this is something I picked up on instantly once I heard that a good way to start growing an audience on Steemit is to begin connecting with new people (just like myself). However, like you stated, the page is full of gibberish and the occasional real introduce yourself article. I like your vision and I will try putting it into action!

Cheers

Thanks for getting active about it! The more the merrier

It is completely driving me crazy. The spam posts are out of control and the vast majority seem to be infringing on copyright, ie, putting up videos or articles that are not their own work.

The solution I'd like to see if some smarts built into the posts that appear in the introduceyourself tag. I'm not sure how hard it would be, but maybe each user can only use the tag once or twice in order to appear in the list.

It wouldn't stop spammers from using the tag, but the rest of us wouldn't have to see it.

Otherwise, we might all need to be way more active in flagging obvious spammers... and maybe a user with a low reputation just won't have their posts visible for the world to see (only to those that follow them).

It's tough, but everything can pretty much be abused... but as a community we might need to decide on what we want Steemit to be, and then fight for it.

Otherwise, I've been ignoring the section and enjoying these posts:

Exactly! Oh yah I like that idea. Like a 1 or two time use only, definitely a great fix if the programming works out!

A lot of spam posts there and this is the reason I do not feel comfortable to wright my introdaction post .

You should still do it anyway! People still try to notice good introductions!

I hope you are right.

Exactly... let's say a 2 time use only... I can't imagine too many instances where someone would be stuffed up too badly by that. People could still use the tag, they just wouldn't show up in the list...

Nice post I really enjoyed it...... Thumb up @diezeldiddy

Ones in a while you can also visit my blog @abiye and check out some interesting article

Will do!

Actually that‘s exactly what I thought when I was doing some reserch for my introduction post. I wanted to see how other people introduce themselfs but in fact I found a lot of crap which didn‘t had anything to do with the purpose of this tag. I think it should be a tag for newbies, it‘s really unfair for new users if you are a bigger player to use this tag for promotion, so that the real intro posts get lost somewhere on page 3000.

Yah I agree, it isn't fair. The welcoming page mentioned above is nice, but that can only catch a fraction of good intros. Something like being able to only use the tag once or twice would be most ideal
