Welcome to the 9th episode of the stemng digest series where we bring to you some of the best posts under the #stemng tag in the past week.
For those that do not know yet, stemng is a sub-community of steemSTEM, a community-driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts by Nigerians on Steemit. The project involves submitting quality STEM-related posts to the steemSTEM management for upvoting and resteeming where applicable.
More information about stemng activities can be found here while information of what it means to be part of steemSTEM can be found here as well.
As we normally do, we have rummaged through the stemng tag and even though there were several good posts to choose from, below are the posts that stood out for week #9.
Saturday: UNDERSTANDING JOURNAL BEARING AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Basic understanding of science taught us that when friction occurs between two surfaces, heat is generated as a result. Also, the efficiency of any machine can never be 100% due to friction. As useful as this frictional force is, it is less desirable in industrial machines. Scientists try to limit this force in machines by the use of bearings, of which journal bearing is one. How does it work actually? Educate yourself by clicking on @mrbreeziewrites post on the topic. I am sure you won't be disappointed.
Sunday: Stirling Engines - Exploiting Temperature Differential to Produce Mechanical Work
It is quite amazing what the development of engines has made mankind to achieve. From motor vehicle engines, ship engines, train engines, aircraft engines to the not so popular engines. As a life scientists, I have not really sat down to fathom the principles upon which engines work. Thanks to steemit and to @churchboy for adding to my knowledge. I implore everyone to have a look at such a beautiful post.
Monday: DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER
This is quite a beautiful piece from @the.chiomz. Often times, especially in developing or underdeveloped parts of the world, scientifically explanable ailments are considered weird and the victims suffer societal neglects. I have never been able to understand multiple personality disorder until I got fascinated by this post. I am sure some of us have been across people with such ailments but too ignorant to know or understand the victims. Kudos to the author.
Tuesday: Energy and Life: Chemical Energy and Organic Life
There is no denying the fact that energy is important to life. Life cannot exist without energy. In this post, @damzxyo explained in details the roles of chemical energy in supporting organic life as well as breaking down each classes of foods to release the necessary energy that supports life. Quite an educative and interesting stuff.
Wednesday: ECLIPSE : A Magnificent Celestial Event (Understand the Mystery Behind a Blood Moon)
This post reminds me of my high school geography. However, it has so much more than high school geography. The story of the burial of the Egyptian Pharaoh makes this post very interesting to read. Who could have thought that what we nowadays understand as simple natural phenomenon was once a source of serious commotion and confusion. What do you all think I'm talking about? The eclipse of course! How does it happen and what are the explanations behind it? @casweeney took us through the journey.
Thursday : Mycological studies and forensic investigations
The development of science is one of the best things to have happened to mankind. If I get involved in a discussion and someone tells me that fungi can help in criminal investigations, I would have said no. However, reading through this post by @aamin really enriched my knowledge that forensic studies isn't just about DNA and fingerprinting, the study of fungi can actually play a critical role in unravelling the mysteries behind some cases.
Friday: THE A.B.S : TECHNOLOGY THAT SAVES LIVES
Everyone knows how important the brake is in an automobile vehicle. In this post, @rharphelle explained one of the vehicular technologies within the last two decades in form of the automatic braking system. How exactly does it work in cars. Does it work in automatic or manual transmission engines? This is a must read for everyone that drives or owns a car. The knowledge from this post can come handy in the nearest future.
