WHY WERE THE DISCIPLES TERRIFIED WHEN YESHUA STILLED THE WIND AND SEA?

I was able to share with my students the passage where Jesus calmed storm. I asked them why do you think the disciples were terrified after Jesus calmed the storm? Yes, because they never seen anything like that, but these were Jewish boys who were trained to know the O.T. The O.T. teaches that only YHWH rules, commands, stills, calms...the sea. All of creation, nature, humans whether friend or foe of YHWH, must obey His Sovereign command.

1. Mark 4:39-41 39He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" 41THEY WERE TERRIFIED and asked each other, "Who is this? EVEN THE WIND AND THE WAVES OBEY HIM!"

2. Psalm 89:9 YOU RULE THE RAGING OF THE SEA; when its waves rise, YOU STILL THEM.

3. Psalms 107:25,29 For HE COMMANDS AND RAISES THE STORMY WIND, Which lifts up the waves of the sea. 29 HE CALMS THE STORM, SO THAT ITS WAVES ARE STILL.

4. Psalm 104:4 HE MAKES WINDS HIS MESSENGERS, flames of fire his servants.

5. Exodus 14:21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; AND THE LORD SWEPT THE SEA BACK by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land, so the waters were divided.

6. Psalm 78:26 HE CAUSED THE EAST WIND TO BLOW in the heavens And BY HIS POWER HE DIRECTED THE SOUTH WIND.

7. Job 26:12 BY HIS POWER HE STILLED THE SEA; by his understanding he shattered Rahab.

8. Psalm 65:7 WHO STILLS THE ROARING OF THE SEAS, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples,

The disciples were terrified because from their study and training in Scripture taught them that only YHWH could do what Yeshua was doing.
They were TERRIFIED because they were in a boat with YHWH.
Having a foundation in the Old Testament only magnifies and enhances our understanding of the New Testament.

Did you get goosebumps reading those Old Testament passages and realizing that Yeshua was doing what YHWH did in the OT? Thus, proving that Yeshua is YHWH! Studying the OT will only broaden and deepen your understanding of the NT. Enjoy His Word!
