Episode 55

Jamal watched as two persons she couldn’t deciphered their faces in the

gloomy night strolled to the spot he was, one of them murmuredsomething before the second cajoled her to stop before they returned to the

other side of the spot available. He tried to look at their faces, but darkness

in the cave had subdued the little faint light supplied by the moon, so seeing clearly was totally impossible. After much tries but to no avail, he

conceded and continued whatever he was doing.

He looked at the moon, it was the same moon Tamara called ‘the lunar.’

The moon she claimed had the power to bring their wishes to pass. But if

that was true, why did it allow her to die? Jamal questioned himself. Well,

it was true he had later grown to a mature man to become the medical

doctor he wanted then, but then, the moon shouldn’t have been selective in

the choice of wishes to attend to and the ones to dump, or better still he

would have been fine if the moon had chosen to dump his wishes and

hereby fulfilling hers. Just maybe they would still be together now and

would have confessed the love he had for her then.

Jamal gazed at the sky, directing his stare at the moon. It was true the wish

was selective but that wouldn’t stop him from making another wish

tonight. So Jamal folded the sleeve of his shirt, wiped off his brow and sat

right to make a wish.

“Dear moon in the sky. Dear crimson Luna of the high. Your beautiful face

has appeared once again, to carry the heavy laden on my heart’s surface.

Hear my cry, oh moon, hear my pleas oh Luna, listen to my heart and

respond to my heart desires …”

Tamara was grouchy when she got to their spot and found an unknown

man occupying it. That was the spot she was sitting when Khalid walked

up to him that day. And after their first encounter, they had decided to

make the same spot ‘their spot’, because that was the place they always met

and had fun before sneaking back to their houses. It was the same place

Khalid was shot an arrow after they had their romp. Tamara had grumbled

at the sight of a man in the same spot when she came in. For all the years

she had been coming no one had ever occupied the place. It took the

intervention of her daughter not to blast the faulty creature who had

effrontery to occupy the place. But still, she wasn’t going to let go,

tomorrow morning she would go back to feed him the petard he deserved.

However, she had something more important to do, so she would let it

slide for now.

She decided to occupy the other spot located at the opposite of the intruder

was and prepared to make her wish.

“Darling,” she called her daughter. “Let’s make our wishes before anything

else. The moon might disappear anytime soon.”

Amanda pouted her mouth. “I have only one wish to make, mom.” She

said, indicating with her index finger.

Tamara raised an eyebrow. “And what is the wish about? You mind telling

me?” She asked.

“You don’t have to know mummy.” She giggled and faced the moon, then

plunged her face into deep seriousness. There was only one wish she was going to make and she was confidence it would surely come to pass.

Tamara watched her daughter amorously as she whispered to herself. She

strained her ears to catch a tittle of what she said, but Amanda made sure

none of her words spilled out to her hearing. Nevertheless she could guess

what her daughter wanted to wish for. She knew it wouldn’t go pass her

father or Jamal. Well her mother had thought right because she made a

wish to the moon to surprise her mother by bringing back by her father to

her because she knew he was not dead as her mother thought. Her mother

might have palpable evidences to claim and believe her father was dead,

but she knew that was not true. She wanted the moon to surprise her by

bringing back her father to them.

Tamara seeing that her daughter had made her wish, she also returned her

face to the moon and prepared to make hers also. She glued her palm

together and focused her attention on the lunar. She said;

“Dear moon in the sky, crimson Luna of the high, your beautiful face has

appeared once again, to carry the heavy laden on my heart’s surface. Hear

my cry, oh moon, hear my pleas oh Luna, listen to my heart and respond to

my heart desires, I want you to protect Khalid for me in afterlife, because I

know someday I would be coming over to meet him and I’m sure thence

would be the renew of what we shared on earth. I also want you to keep

Amanda for me, let her grow up to achieve the dream her father couldn’t

achieve, elevate her above her pears, make her retain the particular smile

her dead father also possessed and lastly, dear crimson lunar, give her the

fortitude to admit her father was truly dead.”
