WHAT IF...?

The breeze gave a soothing sensation as it caressed my skin. With my back side partly glued to the wooden chair on which I sat. It was my Dad's favorite chair. Akaba Olori, meaning the seat for the head is what we called it. On evenings when dad was around he would sit with his legs crossed shaking controllably as his eyes traveled round quizzically.
I wasn't myself. My body ached as the thought of the event of the previous night clouded my thought. What if.... I sighed as I asked over and again.
John and I had known each other for years. We began what later became our love story as shy friends. He would say hi, and all I did was smile in return. This went on for months till that afternoon when our paths crossed outside the school gate. I call it our long walk to freedom. We talked, joked, stared, sigh and glared. John sealed the deal with a peck as he said what till date remains the longest goodbye to me.
It was a moment we wish would not end. What if... my heart pricked as the event of last night came running like the sound of many waters. The words he spoke echoed and I felt a cold shrill run through my body. It was our tradition that we met at least thrice a week for our round of lovers atmosphere. John had suggested this some weeks after we professed our love to each other. He said it would be our zone, our own special time together.

The weather on a Thursday evening was right for lovers who couldn't afford to be seen together in broad daylight. The sun had only just retired for the day. I sighted him from a distance as I approached our favorite spot. He was seated, as usual awaiting the coming of her royal majesty like he would say.

All went well till moments before we parted." Its our last meeting," he said with my body wrapped in his warm embrace. I thought I heard something else... well, I wish I did. I withdrew from him, and for a moment we stared at each other eaving sighs that did more speaking than words.

How do you mean? Why? Wh..my voice croaked as I asked. But he was quiet. I watched him give a last look after which he took his leave.
I have since known no peace. What does "our last meeting" mean?
I have tried to provide answers but the thought of the worst makes me jettison several thoughts as it comes....
What if it was a break up?
What if something had happened and he had to leave town?
What if he was joking and only trying to pull a prank?

WHAT IF.....
