Once again, his eyes were focused on her, their eyes had met a couple of times but he couldn't resist looking at her. she was fair and graceful as always, looking pretty and the wore that killing smile that made him fall in love with her all over again. It felt like a blessing to be in her presence, his inner voice wouldn't quit whispering to him "God must exist, this can never be work of a big bang, an accident".
''Amen", the preacher man said finalizing the prayer and the service for the day, that was when Sam's wits tapped him on the back to remind him that he was in church. His "amen" was the latest but the tone was so low as he kept looking at her and trying to catch a wave back from her which he was offering with his arms so high as he bent over to pick his bag.
He waited till she turned to make her way up the stairs and out of the chapel, he couldn't let this opportunity pass him by as he instinctively smiled to her and said " I think angels do visit our church every now and then". Lizzy as everyone prefered to call her smiled and said thank you. Before Sam could accept her thanks, she told him "Sam, there is someone I would like you to meet, Sam started feeling uneasy as his crush called the dark tall man who was giggling with his phone a few steps behind her. Even from the highest staircase just outside the church, Caleb was still taller than Sam.
"This is my fiancée, Sam" she said as she deflected every opportunity to stair into Sam's eyes directly. Sam smiled and extended his fairly fat hands for a handshake, "Glad to meet you Caleb". He felt as if a five storey building had collapsed on him. tons of guilt weighing down upon him as his consciousness browsed through the romantic text she exchanged with him, the sex in the office and the dinner they had.
As if waking up from a fading dream, he finally heard her voice echoing in the large empty chapel "Caleb was out of town to Africa to undertake a project to help care and support children with mental disorders. He has a PhD in psychiatry". Fading back into his dream of all the moments he had with her when Caleb was out of town, he was awoken by the word "wedding" in the middle of what she was trying to tell him.
"Pardon, I didn't hear you" Sam claimed.
"I was just saying that now that he is back, we will be having our wedding in a few months" Lizzy replied with a gloomy look.
Sam couldn't stand it anymore, that much burden of guilt together with his desire of having lizzy all to himself for the rest of his life raged through his mind as if hungry mice. He wiped the displeasure off his fairly fat white face and told them he was happy for them, that alone made him feel like hanging himself. He turned his back on the good looking couple and made his way out of the church.
He tought to himself, "this may be wrong in your sight" as he looked up a the cross with the sacrifice on it, but I cant let this happen, he isn't going to take my angel. He smiled mischievously and turned to ask Caleb " Do you play Golf?". With Caleb nodding yes to Sam's question, Sam replied again, "Discovery golf club, 8am, Sunday".
"Sure" Caleb replied as he ignored any concerns Lizzy had saying "I think your childhood friend wants to know me better".
Sam turned as the mischievous smile on his pale face deepened, he couldn't wipe that look as got into his orange Chevrolet and drove off.
