Disco Reads, An Audiobook Review

We continue with the second book in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher today. I have decided to shake things up after we cover book 3, and we will get some other books included. I figure everyone doesn't need to hear me rant and rave about this for 15 books straight. Also, I am open to suggestions for new audiobooks to check out. Leave me some ideas in the comments below.

Fool Moon - Jim Butcher

Read by James Marsters

The Story

From the book jacket:

You’d think there’d be a little more action for the only professional wizard listed in the Chicago phone book. But lately, Harry Dresden hasn’t been able to dredge up any kind of work: magical, mundane, or menial.

Just when it looks like he can’t afford his next meal, a murder comes along that requires his particular brand of supernatural expertise. There’s a brutally mutilated corpse, and monstrous animal markings at the scene. Not to mention that the killing took place on the night of a full moon. Harry knows exactly where this case is headed. Take three guesses—and the first two don’t count...

We really start to get a feel for our Harry in this book. The way he thinks, the fact that his snark really doesn't have a limit, and the powers he can wield. In a wonderful way, despite this being a Werewolf story, it doesn't pigeon-hole itself into some cliché story of the one type of monster. They even go over the several different types of 'werewolves' that might be a part of his problem this time around.

We get better looks at some important villains again, and start setting up plot lines that will pay off many books into the series. I have said that the first 3 books of this series are his roughest, and this is still the case, but you will still love this one. Everything just scales so well in the pacing of each book, and across the series as it progresses too.

The Narrator

James Marsters

Not much to add since the last one, other than you can really start to feel him settling in to this character. The nuances are getting better and better. This performance really is starting to become Dresden in name and soul.

Of note about James, he actually missed one of the books (Number 13 - Ghost Story) due to a conflict with scheduling. He was recording another series (Vampire Empire by Susan and Clay Griffith). There was such an outcry about the narration on that book, that they eventually re-released it with James having read it. Don't get me wrong, John Glover was a great stand-in, but he just isn't Harry Dresden. James is.

Another Long story short:

10/10 - Would recommend - again... sensing a pattern here?

One of my favorite series in the mystical, magical, and fantasical worlds!

I better check out the audio books as your description of James Marsters narration work has me interested. I'm wondering how he will fit with the voices I hear when I read the stories! I loved the series on tv too!
