The Transformation of 'Murica

in story •  6 years ago  (edited)

The cogs in the US electoral machine are already beginning to turn in preparation for the 2020 U.S. Presidential campaign. If social media and recent elections are any indicator, many citizens are beginning to wake up to exactly how in need this country is for a major overhaul.

The question that nags away at me is…DO WE STILL HAVE TIME TO SAVE AMERICA?

These past few years have been filled with the ugliest and the most repulsive trilogy of traits that humanity has to offer...hate, violence, and intolerance.

America has completely abdicated itself as a leader on the global stage in every sense of the word. Internally, can’t remember a time when our country has been more divided. Long time friendships and families are being fractured because opposing opinions can no longer be tolerated.

It’s becoming more apparent every day that the state of our union as well as the direction in which our country is headed does not reflect the will of the majority of U.S. citizens. After all, isn’t a democratic nation is supposed to be a reflection of the will and wishes of the majority of its populace? If this isn’t the case either: a) the system is broken and elected officials aren’t working for the citizens who elected them; or b) citizens aren’t engaged in the political process. In the case of our country, it happens to be both.

Welcome to ‘Murica.

"... so long as the people do not care to exercise their freedom, those who wish to tyrannize will do so; for tyrants are active and ardent, and will devote themselves in the name of any number of gods, religious and otherwise, to put shackles upon sleeping men." -- Voltarine de Cleyre

You need only to begin researching to learn the frightening extent to which corporations have infiltrated the U.S. government in the previous decades. We have many former Monsanto executives working for the Food and Drug Administration, which is in charge of protecting public health. One of these former Monsanto employees, Clarence Thomas, is even an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. A myriad of Wall Street executives have been appointed to our Federal Reserve, the central banking system of this country responsible for maintaining the health of our economy. Do you think these ex-corporate executives are working for the benefit of the average American citizen or their to forward the agenda of their constituency?

Let’s examine how well our almighty corporate overlords are serving and protecting the citizenry of this country.

Despite the United States consistently having the highest gross domestic product (GDP, the total value of goods and services provided in a country in one year) of any other country on the planet, our nation’s infrastructure is crumbling. The U.S. now ranks twenty-eighth in the world in test scores for math and science. Also, an increasing number of Americans are going overseas for medical procedures because they can save a significant amount of money without sacrificing quality. Each year retirees are leaving our shores because their meager retirement funds go much further in foreign countries. Due to the high cost of a college education, more and more of our children are choosing to go to college overseas rather than to start their adult lives burdened with crippling debt in the form of student loans.

The 2015 World Happiness Report ranked the U.S. fifteenth on its list. Pharmaceutical companies are happy to run to the rescue with a litany of antidepressants. In fact, antidepressants are now the most prescribed drug in America (painkillers are a very close second), 1 in 10 Americans use antidepressants daily and that number jumps to 1 in 4 in women aged 40’s and 50’s. Wouldn’t it be better to change our system than to numb ourselves to the anguish of it?

Despite the fact that violent crime has been steadily decreasing since 1991, today the U.S. incarcerates more of its citizens than any other country in the world, including China. American citizens represent only 5 percent of the global population, yet its citizens comprise 25 percent of world’s prisoners. Each year more U.S. prisons are becoming privatized and run by corporations like Corrections Corporation of America that are then offering these inmates as an extremely cheap labor force to U.S. companies and making billions of dollars annually as a result.

‘Murica spends more than half of its annual budget on the military while U.S. teachers are working increasingly longer hours for very little pay. In some school systems teacher’s physical safety is threatened on a regular basis. Other countries are making smart investments in infrastructure like renewable energy, technology and social programs to prepare for a very different future that, like it or not, we will all soon be a part of.

CEO-to-worker pay ratio in this country has grown one thousand percent since 1950 but the average American worker continues to work longer hours and are paid less. Did you know that in 2015 over thirty billion taxpayer dollars were given to subsidize the meat producing industry? As a result this, industry churns out artificially cheap antibiotic and growth hormone laden food that harms us and our environment.

You haven’t heard much about the coming silicon labor crisis in the corporate-owned ‘Murican media but you will soon. An Oxford study forecasts 45 percent of U.S. jobs will eliminated in the next twenty years by a massive wave of artificially intelligent robots and computers who will displace nearly half of the entire U.S. workforce. This sounds like science fiction but it’s not. Other countries are preparing for this shift in employment by putting an emphasis on educating their citizens in math, science, and computer coding. Many developed countries also have a more robust social safety net to help lessen the catastrophic impact of a major job shift such as this.

While a majority of the rest of the developed world enjoys better quality healthcare, education, works less, and enjoys a better quality of life, ‘Murica trudges forward with an antiquated, short-sighted policies designed mainly to generate short-term corporate profit.

According the a 2012 Voter Turnout Report only 57.5% of eligible U.S. citizens voted in the 2012 Presidential election. I can understand how the current state of affairs can make you feel as though your vote doesn’t count but this must somehow change. We must take the reins of our government back by actively participating in the political process and voting out incumbents who’ve done nothing but push their corporate agenda.

Do we still have time to save ourselves? I don’t know the answer but I do know that our odds will only get worse the longer we wait. We need to pay less attention to what the politicians say and more attention to what they do. Americans are better than this and we deserve better. It’s up to each of us to make sure this happen. As American citizens we must transform ourselves into millions of prickly thorns that doggedly hold elected officials accountable for their actions.

No matter where you fall in the political spectrum the only way to transform ‘Murica back to America is from the inside. Each of us need to educate ourselves as much as we can about the candidates and their stances on the issues and become more engaged in the political process. We have a small window of opportunity and it won’t be here forever. If we don’t act cohesively and soon all of our privacies and freedoms will be stripped of us. Don’t squander this chance to save ourselves from decades or even centuries of suffering. We all have one life, one vote, so I implore you to make it count in the coming election and each and every election hereafter.

You say you want a revolution?

Now is the time, the power is still in our hands, and our voices are still mightier than the sword. Transforming ‘Murica back to America will take a tremendous amount of work from each of us and it will have to be an inside job. New blood like recently elected Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and forward-thinking ideas like Green New Deal are interjecting a little hope that we still have a chance. Knowing that we will hand our children the reins of America instead of a lifetime sentence in ‘Murica will make every bit of this hard work worthwhile.

Whatever your political slant, now is not the time for apathy...get involved. Let the dismal state of this country be a wakeup call that sparks an American renaissance, instead of the beginning of our demise. It’s not anti-American to bring these truths to light and work towards a better future for all of us, in fact it’s very much pro-American.

‘Murica is the country we’ve settled for but America is the country we deserve. Making a real commitment to work towards this is the best collective New Year's Resolution I can think of.

I must say your post paints a very grim picture. But true (really, that's why it's so grim, because it's all so very real). And I honestly don't think it can be saved, I'm sorry to say :(
i agree very much with the quote used in the beginning, but exercising one's freedom is more than just voting, in my opinion. Not in an election where it makes little difference who the chosen candidate is. They will most likely govern by someone else's rules an agenda.
Seems to me that the governing system is rotten to the core. There may be hope in young politicians, but that gets worn down by the old system. You don't play by our rules, you don't play at all.
I think real change could only happen through tearing the whole thing down. The country belongs to the people and they should be the ones who truly govern, who actually make decisions. They should be a lot more involved than just checking a box on a voting ballot... That is so easy to rig and even if it isn't rigged, it's not going to be in the citizen's best interest (as you pointed out).
But that takes active interest from people. If they are content with just ticking a box (often not even that), then change can not happen...

Excellent post, Eric. The sort of thing more people should be reading, I believe. Because little by little, this is how you wake up.

Thanks! The general mood in this country is the darkest it's been in my life. There's a true feeling of hopelessness, especially among the young. The system has been completely hijacked by the ultra wealthy and the corporations and makes people feel powerless. People are so frustrated and thirsty for change and that it's created an environment where someone like Trump can be elected President.

You nailed the root of the problem...decades of apathy. At the very least I hope more people are paying attention now, educating themselves, and getting involved in creating a better future.

Trouble is - in my opinion - that so many expect someone else to come in and do their work for them. Which is why they rarely educate themselves or pay attention, I'm afraid. They expect ready made answers such as here's candidate X and he's gonna solve all your problems. People try to break free and to change things, but the trouble is there are often smart rich people who know how to take advantage of that and manipulate the crowd in a direction that works for them...:/

So true @honeydue! We need to “Make People Think Again”! #MPTA

Very sad and accurate picture. I don't know if your country is now more divided, could be that differences are amplified by very vocal extremists on both sides who take advantage of social media. However, that's not the biggest problem - the way I see it getting involved and voting is pretty much useless as long as there are only two options. Both parties are part of the same system and the differences are purely cosmetic. The American public is constantly dragged into meaningless dramas, fueled by fiery rhetoric and in the meantime big corporations make loads of money and come up with new plans to screw the people over. Even if some decent guy made his way on the political stage he wouldn't stand a chance if he didn't learn how things works. All the problems you mentioned - military budget, healthcare, education - these are and will remain the same no matter who's in charge. Trump signed a law to increase military spending, just like Obama before him and whoever comes next will do the same. College costs just as much under Republicans as under Democrats. Not much hope I'm afraid as long as the system remains in place.

The two parties, in many ways, are opposite sides of the same coin. The 2016 Presidential election was proof enough of that. It all seems like theatrics devised to distract us from what is really going on. You are 100% correct, a viable third party backed by deep-pocketed supporters is the only way out of this mess without starting from scratch. Thanks, @ladyrebecca!

I appreciate @ericvancewalton's heartfelt plea for change in the US. But I agree with @intothewild, @ladyrebecca, @honeydue, and @clumsysilverdad. The US can't be saved.

Ultimately, the best way to deal with the decline of the US is to leave it. If you can't leave it, it's best to stay off of Facebook (where nasty political arguments are everywhere), don't watch the mainstream news channels, and get an online job (to avoid all of the onerous labor laws that keep you from getting enough hours).

For several reasons, participating in politics is not the answer. First, elections are held between candidates that have media support. If a candidate doesn't get media coverage, he/she has no chance of winning. But the media will only support a candidate that has huge fundraising totals. This leads to elections between candidates that advocate similar policies, since they are all funded by the same people.

Second, the most popular elections are for the Presidency. But the electors for the electoral college are not chosen proportionally and there is no runoff. So a candidate can win with a plurality of the vote. In other words, even if the majority of people in a single state vote against a particular candidate, the candidate can still receive 100% of that state's electors, as long as the people who voted against him were split over who to replace him with. This is how Trump won Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Florida in 2016.

In this kind of an environment, it only makes sense for candidates to be as extreme as possible. The more extreme you are, the more you fire up your base and get them to the polls. Trying to build a "big tent," on the other hand, is a waste of time because you don't need a majority to win, just a plurality.

I would change my mind if I saw a candidate that had enough financial support to win but was also trying to build a big tent. So far, I don't see that happening. Some say Howard Shultz is that guy. But he hasn't said enough yet for anyone to know whether that is true or not. So in the meantime, I still think its best to stay out of politics, avoid the news, and make plans to leave the country.

I've had the urge to leave since 2008 but it hasn't proven as easy as I hoped. The Housing Crisis of that year plunged my wife and I into such deep debt, it took seven years of hard work to dig ourselves out.

I agree with most of what you've written. It's crazy how alternate viewpoints aren't tolerated on social media. I remember a time when people could debate without becoming enemies. After all, hearing alternate viewpoints is how we learn from one another. I'm very happy with how this post was received, the comments were civil and intelligent. If I had posted this on Facebook it would have been a no holds barred troll-fest. Lol.

I appreciate your comment, @tomblackstone!

I tend to stay away from political comments in here by giving the torch to others.

after reading what you wrote:

We have many former Monsanto executives working for the Food and Drug Administration,

I did want to say this about Monsanto found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmer_Assurance_Provision,

Those who opposed the provision referred to it as the "Monsanto Protection Act", on the premise that it "effectively bars federal courts from being able to halt the sale or planting of controversial genetically modified (aka GMO) or genetically engineered (GE) seeds, no matter what health issues may arise concerning GMOs in the future".

If this isn't proof of the fox being in charge of the hen house I don't know what is! Despicable. Thanks for posting that link!

I don't think it can be saved. The new version will be a MexUsCan northamerica after the great transformation. (-:

Wanting to save the US is like trying to save an alcoholic bum on the corner of the street by giving him a 20 dollar bill.

Let it crash and burn. The idea of statism I mean, not the people and land as a whole. You own yourself Eric, don't forget that.

I thought you might have meant tranceformation.

Very good thinking by a citizen for his country's well future .

It’s even arguable whether or not Merica still has the biggest GDP since there are two ways of measuring it:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)

But right now the yield curve is flattening and part of it has even inverted. So there’s a good chance that the economy is less than a year away from falling off a cliff, even worse than 2008.

I agree about a coming crisis, @preparedwombat. It will make 2008 look like a minor hiccup. What I hope is the crypto markets will decouple from traditional financial markets and will gain momentum while the traditional markets flounder. Traditionally, in times of extreme financial crisis, money has flooded into precious metals but maybe this time crypto will take its place.

The crypto and precious metals markets are both tiny compared to the equities and bond markets so both could be “safe haven alternatives” this time around. 😎

It’s worth remembering though that in the early stages of the crash a decade ago, even gold, silver, and mining stocks went down because investors were selling almost anything to raise cash to cover margin calls. And the derivatives markets have gotten even bigger than they were the last time around. We could be facing a perfect storm.

I'm really hoping people begin to see the crypto sector as that safe haven. This is really all we'd need to begin to tip the scales.

I think we're in for one h@ll of a wild ride. Happy Holidays to you and your family!

You are an aware citizen of America . I apriciated your article .

I don't know yet how to best answer to many of your points but I can see you're pained by the situation in your country. Am an African, but I read a lot through books and I know this is going to happen, it didn't just start today, I've known this is what will end America 15 years ago. Am a bookworm, and I can predict to a point using past historical evidence. Your country has neglected so many paths, it's a pity you're just noticing it now. If the government is providing everything for you, you should know it's going to make all you her citizens dummies and take everything away from you.

There is still solution though. If the country can wake.

I also want you to take solace in the fact all country in the world share this same problem, but it's higher in one county than the other.

I appreciate the comment, @botefarm! I think many Americans have realized the perilous situation for quite some time (at least since the Housing Crisis of 2008) but have felt powerless to make any substantial changes. It's smart to take clues from the past. I hope we see some substantial changes during this next election cycle. People definitely are waking up, the cryptocurrency has been a huge proponent in changing people's viewpoints.
