Just got back from watching “Star Wars Episode VIII – The Last Jedi”. Wow, how long have I been waiting for this to come out? But anyways, I thought I’d throw in my two cents worth and post about what my thoughts are at this moment. Fresh from the theatre.
Well, I’ll be honest. I did read up on a couple of reviews as well as taking a sneak peek at the Rotten Tomatoes score meter. 92% aggregated. Not bad at all. So, bearing that in mind, I went in with eager expectations, though I must admit not overly so. I’m already of the mind-set that these new movies must be viewed with as much neutrality as possible. Do not even think of comparing them with the originals. Star Wars began in a different era, a different world and was seen in a completely different light. Take these for what they are. And in the case of “The Last Jedi”, a somewhat mixed bags.
We kick off proceedings with the usual grandiose introductory action set-piece followed then by the continuation of the story arcs from the previous movie as well as starting a few new ones. The cliff hanger ending between Rey and Luke plays a major storyline as well as the dark The First Order from Episode VII hot on the heels of the rebellion. We have Finn finding a new love interest and Po taking more of a central role than before. Expect also to get more fleshing out of uber arch villain Snoke and the personality conflicted Kylo Ren. I feel any more information than that would delve into spoiler territory.
The action is visual stunning but that comes as no big surprise. The perfected art of on-screen “dog fighting in space” and the now mandatory light sabre battles are a joy to watch. Not so much of the eye-candy filled dance of artistic chorography from the previous trilogy (Episode I – III) but rather sheer brutal and punishing blows that at times made me wince. It has a raw edge to it and therefore I think more of an impact to the viewer. There are a couple of scenes (one in particular) that will make your jaw absolutely drop in exhilarated glee. They guys who put these scenes together deserve every bit of praise they get.
Now while that’s all fine and dandy, the movie does slowdown in places. Though stops just short of it becoming a cumbersome drag. I understand character development is integral to the plotline especially since this is the movie that leads up the grand finale being Episode IX but it never seemed to pack that “punch of emotion” I was waiting for throughout. It was told very evenly and matter-of-factly, rendering the final payoffs at the end a little muted. Could that be because I had seen it all before and was suffering from a bout of “Star Wars” overdosing? Right now, I’m not that sure. I just feel that certain “something” was lacking.
There are Star Wars easter eggs and clichés littered all over the place and whilst these appreciative nods are a charming addition to the movies, it just serves as a reminder of how great the original movies really were. Trying not to draw comparisons is very difficult at the best of times. But the message is clear. They are attempting to make the transition from the “old” to the “new” as seamlessly as possible. And the very fact that we get to see the actors that literally “made” many of our childhoods back on the big screen is enough to bring a tears to your eye.
All in all, this was a good movie. Anything more than that would be stretching it a little. I would recommend going to see it but preferably without expectations running away with you. Take this new universe for what it is and you should have an enjoyable time at the movies! Now with all the questions left at the end of this film, I’m now more intrigued than ever to see what they screen writers come up with for the last in this third Star Wars movie trilogy.
I haven't seen it yet, but you bet your ass I wanna!
I've been staying away from ALL reviews, but I couldn't NOT read what you have to say about it @ezzy.
Great review without spoiling the movie. I try to stay away from hype nowadays as it usually leads to disappointment. But that same movie without falling into the hype ends up pretty well done, all said.
Have a great holiday season, bud! :D

Hey man! Hope you are keeping well...
Yeah, staying away from all the reviews to watch it from an entirely fresh perspective is a great idea. It can skew your judgement at the best of time. But it will be interesting to get your opinion too. I`m really divided at the moment.
Maybe it needs some time to simmer in my mind, lol... :)
All the best to you and the fam, buddy. Happy holidays! :)

Haha. I think your perspective depends a lot based on how big of a fan of the original trilogy you are...imho, the bigger the fan the bigger the disappointment :)
But I do not regret paying for the ticket!!
I agree, I went in unspoiled and it helped me make up my own mind before getting all these foreign thoughts from the universe of critics and fans.
Happy holiday to you and @rea, dude!

I don't think any new Star Wars movie will recreate the original's feel and tone. Those movies broke the mould back in the day and therefore it's nigh on impossible to even get close. But I guess it is what it is. :)
Happy holidays to you and your family, buddy. All the best. :)

Really nice movie! Made me emotional in many scenes and remembering gladly the hidden references to the old movies. I like the tone of this one! Certainly not perfect, there are too many characters while some could be better developed. Others were introduced on this movie probably to better explored on the next one, which is not bad for the trilogy but ends up a bit empty on this one. Totally worth!

It was good, no doubt. But did it reach the echelons I was hoping for? Maybe not from my point of view. But regardless, this movie has divided opinion across the board.
Thanks for letting me know your thoughts. :)

Once again the great @ezzy's post totally eclipses my puny one :'D
I totally agree with your sentiment and verdict. The many changes would undoubtedly divide the fanbase. It has many merits , but I think that people would focus more on the negatives. The slow moments really bog down the narrative, but some are undoubtedly quite essential to expand the universe. There are high highs and low lows. In a high stakes movie like this, everything would be seen through a microscope, so despite the highs, the lows would stick.
Good of you to write a spoiler-free review. If you ever feel like and/or have time for my tiny ol' post, swing by if you feel like.

I couldn't have put it better myself, bro! The slow moments, at times, seem unnecessary. I enjoyed it for what it was overall but that "certain something" was lacking. My personal feelings, of course... Though look at what they had to live up to, lol. Would they ever have been able to please everybody?
I hope you are well, my awesome brother. And of course, will be seeing you on the "other side" soon... :)

Thanks for sharing! I was disappointed with the film. I wanted it to be good, but also tried to keep my expectations low. It's difficult when you've grown up with the words and the characters your whole life.

I know. If only we could kindle some of that old magic back. Alas, it may never happen. But just be glad we were lucky enough to experience such as iconic movie event as the original trilogy. :)

I was a lot more disappointed than you and my movie experience was kind of thwarted by the plot holes. But it was fun seeing the universe again..maybe the last one will redeem it for me!

I hear ya, buddy. I feel there were some glaring issues (especially with certain plot points that I couldn't go into) but I would still like to watch it again just to affirm my initial reaction! :)

I haven't seen this one yet, although I am looking forward to it. I appreciate the review. I was hoping this one wouldn't be a stinker (like the first three episodes), so 7 out of 10 is not too bad.

It's a generous rating, I feel. But upon second viewing, I think warranted. Would love to hear your thoughts once you check it out for yourself. :)

Thanks very much, @earthangel! Please, please check the old ones out! They are considered the "standard" by which everything else is judged coming after it. Would love to hear your thoughts... :)

Very well structured and carefully worded review bro. I was just discussing the details of this film yesterday and I haven't watched it yet but definitely is on the Watch list. It sucks that there is no real human connection with a depth of profound impact but I do look forward to the fight scenes as usual. You can't possibly mess that up.
Either way, thanks for the insight without the spoilers. I can rely on your movie reviews it seems. Don't know if you missed my last comment on your Pledge of Allegiance post, but get back to me when you can. I'll be in touch soon.
Happy holidays broooo
