This mosque was built in 1612 during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda. Some say the original mosque was built even earlier in 1292 by Sultarn Aceh Mahmudsyah. The Royal Mosque features a multi-tiered thatched roof, a typical architectural aceh. When the Dutch East Indies Colonial Administration attacked the palace during the first Acehnese expedition on 10 April 1873, the aceh attacked the knights of the Baiturrahman Great Mosque. From several flares shot to the roof of the hay, the mosque burned. General Van Swieten promised the local ruler he would rebuild the mosque and create a warm place for mercy. In 1879 the Dutch rebuilt the baiturrahman mosque as a gift for and to reduce the anger of the Acehnese. Development Only began in 1879 when the first stone was placed by the fair-minded Tengku Qadhi, who became his first priest, and finished on 27 December 1881 during the reign of Muhammad Daud Shah, the Last Sultan of Aceh.
