Memoir of a runaway girl - A true story!

Time went on and Tony and I broke up a few times during our time in the townhouse.

Was it a sign that I may be doing the wrong things in my life? I just was not sure. I did know I cared very much for him; actually, I was in love with Tony.  From 1978 until this point in my life, Doris and I stayed in contact in strange ways. We would run into each other now and again. She had married about five years after I married Remo and she had a little girl. Her husband was a total loser; he put an entire new meaning to stereotypical welfare trailer park trash. He fathered nine children with seven women, and did not support any of them. He worked under the table as a Disc Jockey and was quite abusive.

Doris had left him a month after I left Remo. Now Doris and I were becoming best friends again and doing many things together. Mind you, she and I had very different ideas about being single. She admitted to sleeping with over 150 men! I could only admit to four, which I think speaks volumes about her character.  It was 1992 when I made another horrible mistake in my life.  I allowed Doris, yes the one who flipped me over her back over a sewing machine and rent I did not take, to rent my basement. She had the nerve to move in her sixteen-year-old boy toy and things just got worse between Tony and me.

The living conditions were not what they should have been. There was so much bickering while Doris lived there. Arguments about her not paying her rent, and she acted as if she owned the place.  Not to mention the holes in the walls her and her “adopted son/boyfriend” were causing with their horse playing.

Finally, things came to a head. Tony was on the phone, talking to his father.

I was carrying up a coffee for him when I overheard him saying, “Dad, she has no say in this, I am moving out”.

Talk about a punch to the gut, I knew things were tense, but move out tense?  I proceeded up with his coffee, at which time he got off the phone with his dad. Now I should mention that his family did not like me. They saw me as nothing more then a roadblock in their son’s life.

I was eight years older than he was, and I had two children, and I was still going through a divorce. I am not very sure on what constitutes being named a cougar, but I definitely got that feeling from all of them.

I questioned him about what I heard and he confirmed, he was moving out. He claimed he was moving in with his mom and in all honesty, as much as I was hurting inside, I understood why he was doing it.  His mom and dad were divorced, and apparently, he felt better about moving back in with his mother.  He packed up his belongings and took a few things and left, saying he would be back the following day for more of his things.

Here I was, alone, no job and rent to pay which I really could not afford on my own, and a roommate who only paid one out of four months since moving in.

The next day Tony called and said he was coming over. No problem, I was ready for him. When he arrived, I greeted him at the door and offered to help, he insisted that I do not help him and asked me to stay in the house.

Now I don’t know about other women, but when a man wants to do it all without any help and does not want you near his car, they has to be a reason for it.

So naturally, I ignored his request and I was sorry that I did. In the passenger seat was Tanya, his step mom’s younger sister. She had this nasty grin on her face, like “I won you lost, hahaha”.

Tony came back in the house and I asked, “So what the hell is this all about? You said you were moving into your mom’s place and now you show up with her?”

His response was, “she just came for the drive, there is nothing going on and yes, I am moving in with my mom”.

What choice did I have, but to believe him until I was able to prove that he was a liar? Well it didn't take long. I called his mom’s place and every time I called, he was in the shower, he was out, or he was sleeping.

I knew Tony and he did not sleep and go out that much, so my mind was racing and it came to me. He must have been staying with Tanya in the basement apartment of his dad’s house. Sure enough, I was right. Sparks started flying and it was time to get even.

BBS’, here I come!  I met a nice guy on the computer, who invited me out for dinner, offering a limo to come pick me up. I dressed in my shortest skirt, high heels and yes, made sure I had cleavage showing. I got ready quite early since I knew Tony was coming over to pick up a few more items.

He came in, I walked down the hall, all made up and looking pretty hot if I don’t mind saying myself. He looked at me and his facial expression was priceless.

He asked, “Did you get dressed up because you knew I was coming over?”

I replied, “No not at all. I have a date tonight and I dressed up for him.”  Hmm, was I getting to him yet?

He then said, “How come you never dressed like this for me? Maybe if you had I would not have been so quick to leave?

My reply, “Because you and I never really went out anywhere, so I had no reason to. But tonight he is sending a limo for me and I wanted to look nice.”

I could clearly see his jealousy in his  face. Nevertheless, he left and now I was free to do what I wanted, and with whom I wanted to do it. His loss was another’s gain.  No matter how much I kept telling myself I was going to be okay, even though my heart was tearing apart.

I was picked up by a limo, and I met this new man at a fancy restaurant near the airport. He was apparently from my hometown, Lethbridge, and was only in town for business.

He was a nice guy, slightly balding and my age. We talked, we drank, we laughed, and something came out during all the talking. I had mentioned Frank, my very first boyfriend I had in Lethbridge. I was so in love with Frank that I had given him my virginity at seventeen. Frank soon after had left me for a friend of mine named Giselle. Well low and behold, this man was her husband and he knew of me and knew Frank quite well. I was talking to the guy that stole Giselle (my ex friend) from Frank. Talk about justice.

We joked about what it would be like if I were to become his mistress. I told him I was moving back to Lethbridge in a month since I could no longer afford to live where I was. He offered to pay my rent in Lethbridge and all my bills as long as I made myself available to him when he wanted to be with me.

Now, I gave this about fifteen minutes of thought, weighing out all the different scenarios in my mind. My bills would be paid in full; I would be close to my family and what a nice payback to Tony. However, an attack of morality came over me and I told him that no matter how tempting it was, I just could not do this. It was definitely something out of the scope of what I was willing to lower myself to become.

He took my parent’s phone number, since I would stay with them while I looked for an apartment. We parted ways with a hug and that was that.  I got into a taxi and all the way home, I thought about what I was doing and what would be in store for me in Lethbridge.

During my month of packing and getting ready to move, Doris took over the place and we stopped talking. I informed the property owner about her refusal to move and apologized to him about leaving her for them to deal with.

My dad and mom came up with their car, pulling a trailer for my furniture. I had rented a moving truck to take the rest. The boys went with their grandparents and I went to see Tony at work to say one last goodbye, to wish him luck in his life.

On the road to Lethbridge, I had to drive five hours in the pouring rain. I was balling my eyes out the entire way. I just kept thinking what could have been and I did not know what my future would hold for me.
