POLITICS AS USUAL

Once upon a time... So you know this is fiction... once upon a time...
There were two people who held the same political views. They were friendly in that context only. They never really shared much about themselves outside of the political environment that they agreed upon.

One day one of these friends began to change their political view. As a matter of fact they were no longer interested in any political view at all. The other friend stayed with their politics. They liked each other and really did desire to remain friendly. But it was not possible since the friendship had not been rooted outside of the political association.

Oh well. these kinds of relationships come and go.

Still they tried to find some common ground. They decided to meet and try to discuss things to see how a friendship could be maintained. But the political friend would not meet unless they brought a mediator, a third person to make sure there were no misunderstandings.

I could have told them that this meeting would fail. Friendships don't require mediators. They are person to person relationships. The political friend could not let go of politics. For them the meeting was something official. Perhaps they hoped to get the other friend to come back into politics like before.

There were some tears upon greeting each other in the eyes of the non-political friend but the eyes of the political friend remained dry although they seemed to be a little moved by some emotion. Everything was cordial and any harsh words that had been spoken were cleared. But a person to person friendship was not possible. After all there was a mediator. It was politics as usual.
