Daily Fun Facts #11: The Odd Sport of Bottle Kicking

One of the things I like to do is check out oddball sporting events from all over the world. I have been fortunate enough to spectate at a few rather odd sporting events, but they have all been regional...as a military brat, my family moved all over the country...and each place we went to had something unique about it...as an example, rodeos are held out west and in Texas...they are not a big thing in New England or the upper Midwest, where snowmobile races dominate during the winter season...and that got me to thinking...what are some other regional sporting events from around the world...?

For those of you unfamiliar with bottle kicking...it vaguely resembles rugby...in the sense that are very few discernible rules, and participants often endure broken bones and insane injuries. The sport use a small keg that contains ale as the "ball." The contest takes place between the two villages of Hallaton and Medbourne, with residents of each village playing for their own team. The keg is thrown into the air 3 times and on the 3rd go the rugby scrum begins. The object, much like in rugby, is to get the keg of beer over hills and valleys and across the stream...the streams are one mile apart.

Nobody knows exactly when this tradition began, only that it has been going on for a couple hundred years at least... and thousands of people attend each year...contests last for approximately 5 hours and the team with the most goals wins. The contest takes place once a year, on Easter Monday...and each contest is kicked off with a Hare Pie Scramble...which is just as it sounds...the pie is blessed by the local vicar, and then torn apart and thrown to the throngs of people in attendance.
