Construction of the dam began in 1960. The process of moving the monument took place from 1964 to 1968.
Temples were cut into blocks weighing up to 30 tons (an average of 20 tons), moved to a new location and assembled anew. All works were carried out by Soviet [sources not specified 218 days] specialists and foreign engineers with the information support of UNESCO.
During the construction of the Aswan Dam, the transfer of the monument lagged behind. Therefore, around the old temple, a protective wall was built from the river. Further work was carried out 12 meters below the level of the Nile.
The new location of the temples is 65 meters higher and 200 meters further from the river. The transfer of the monuments of Abu Simbel and Fili is considered one of the largest engineering and archaeological operations in the world.
