The 2-Sentence Short Story Slam # 1 - Contest and Theme

How's 10 Steem sound, for a two sentence short story? Too good to be true? Well, there are so many talented authors here so it may sound easier than it is to win, but three Steemians will win 10 Steem! Will it be you?

Theme: Sci-fi and Blockchain

This first contest is dedicated to my favorite genre: Sci-fi. There's so much we've learned from the imaginative writings of the sci-fi greats. Lately, I've really been enjoying trying to imagine our blockchain future and have been into #blockchainfiction.

So for this contest, you must write a 2 sentence short story with the above theme.

Simple Rules:

Post your 2 sentence short story in the comments of this post where I can keep an eye on it.

At the end of the post payout window, I'll pick three winning stories, and their authors will receive 10 Steem each. To put that into perspective, back in July 2016, 10 Steem would've been worth northwards of 50 USD.

(please note: I have a tendency to also award honorable mentions with some Steem, so don't be surprised if that happens here)

It's not a requirement, but voting this post up and resteeming does help share the love, and makes it more fun.
And if you haven't already, check out some of the Blockchain Fiction I've been posting over the last few days and give a vote and a comment! Blockchain Explorer Series (Fiction).

Sort Order:

In the year 2020, a problematic looping smart contract was identified inside the main frame of the Large Hadron Collider. Little was known until its parameters revealed its own architecture.

That sounds like the beginning of an epic "Contact" like story!

Thank you, @prufarchy, for this stimulating challenge! I'm throwing my hat into the ring. Here's my entry for your consideration:

"The breakthrough we techno-historical archivists had been waiting for was the result of the serendipitous synergy of two diverse singularities, namely, the appearance of transcendently intelligent A/I, and the advent of the D-Wave64 64k-qubit quantum computer."

"Combining the two, we were finally able to reconstruct the missing cryptographic links in the ancient blockchains with sufficient accuracy to determine the True Name and Identity of Satoshi Nakamoto."

😄😇😄

@creatr

I would read the entire story, and would hope it's 1500 pages long. The techno-historical archivists idea reminds me of the Psychohistorians in Foundation.

Also, imagine gaming on a quantum computer, or running nicehash??

Thanks for the encouraging comment!

I don't know whether I could know that I couldn't match Asimov's stamina, writing thousands of pages and hundreds of books in his lifetime... However, I'd put forth a good effort to make reading the "novel length" version worth your while... :D

"And when I wake up from the cryogenic sleep the first thing I do is ask about the Blockchain, if it still existed. When someone tells me that the previous day had been mined the last Bitcoin my eyes are closing slowly, a smile comes to my mouth and I die."

Haha, I love it! I think if I came back and could only ask one question, it would be "Did the empire fall yet?"

Welcome to the short story slam!

:D I would ask something different too hehehe, but Blockchain was the main point ;)
Glad you like it!

Great point haha. I think I'd be happy enough to die knowing that blockchain survived, and changed it all... if I was a cryo-pop :)

Father's will indicated my inheritance was buried under the oak tree at the end of the drive. I dug up three metal containers, each filled with obsolete currency featuring pictures of Presidents.

note: after a brief sabbatical I have returned to steemit, if you have time check out my new work.

Love your story! :) :D

Thanks @creatr

Entry A (happy):

"HOW much did you spend, uploading a scan of your brain to the blockchain?"
"Why not? As long as the blockchain lives, so shall I."

Entry B (depressing):

Your child's brain dump has been encrypted. 300 BTC to get it back.

(N.B. I don't think brain uploading is possible, but it makes great science fiction.)

Hi again, @prufarchy,

As your rules do not explicitly specify whether or not multiple entries are allowed, here is a secondary entry from me:

The New Teleportation Machine
by @creatr

Looks interesting.
You go first.

😄😇😄

@creatr

Yup, I definitely did not put limits on how many stories people could write :) I'm really glad you shared this 2-sentence short story, it's really good and gave me a much needed laugh as I deal with salespeople.

Just realized that I didn't address the "blockchain" element of the sci-fi theme.
Here's my revised version:

The New Teleportation Machine
by @creatr

"Proof of Continuity" looks interesting...
You go first.

I'm smiling now, to think that I gave you a good laugh today! :D

So, I'm also now curious... What kind of sales people do you deal with in your daily endeavors? :)

The advertising kind. They're usually selling packages to clients that don't exist and then blaming me and mine for not being able to provide the execution for said non-existing items.

I call it the circle of strife haha

Hahahah...

Thanks for the partial enlightenment. Good luck with the salespeople today! :)

First off, just wanted to say great contest idea !!Here is my story.

I woke up to the loud sound of luggage falling from the compartment above me as well as the voice of a flight attendant shouting, "stay seated and keep calm".

People are screaming as we get higher and higher until we crash into the sky, glass is falling all around us, water then surrounds us which breaks through the windows and starts filling the plane.

That's a surreally sublime sci-fi short story ;)

Thanks for being a part of the contest!

Thank you!

Returning to earth from an epic 1000 year space odyssey only to find no traces whatsoever of our civilization. After searching for day the only man-made object to be found was steel block made from chains, captain is that one of those blockchains from the past.

Imagine all the info you might get out of a steel block like that...

Thanks for the story :)

Thanks for the opportunity to enter into your futuristic contest.

Haha not quite sci fi or original but definitely spooky! Thanks!

i won't win.. just kicking off the party.
Clearly someone will grasp the idea.
Not everyone here is a writer. I know I am not.

Hey I enjoyed it! Thanks for participating and taking the time

Its been awhile since I have hung out on Steemit
Nice to see your still doing contests!
I resteemed

"Captain, The Blockchain, It's broken! It's leaking... Blocks... Everywhere!"
"Scotty, Get Ahold of Yousel--" Just then, a mechanical voice began " 3.. 2.. 1..."

First off, so great to see you! I was away a bit for a while too but yeah, I can't stay away from giveaways for too long, poetry or otherwise.

Second, what in the heck is your blockchain running!?! I wonder what a blockchain block would feel like... physically. Probably like a CD rack, I imagine ;)

Thanks for your 2-sentence, sci-fi short story!

As I stepped through the portal I realized I was 96 years in the future and the sunglasses I had been wearing suddenly became a display screen with information such as my name, address and net worth. In the years I had skipped I had become a billionaire on the Blockchain and I had no wish to go back!

You'd leave it all behind, everyone and all? I mean, it doesn't sound like you had an option to go back, so not a bad futurama to step into!

Haha... No, I would step back thru that portal and grab my family! :) Just tried to write an interesting story. :)

As I lay shaking in my bed, I gaze, with fear, into the brightest light I have ever seen and realize I am moving. There is no escape as my body starts to lift into this light. to be continued...

I couldn't tell if this was an alien abduction story, or a death experience story. I like the ambiguity! I feel like that's what helps grip readers. Nice contribution, thanks for being a part of this!

Very cool that you saw both storylines! Thank you for the compliment but thank you more for the challenge. Great idea to get things flowing in a cool direction.

Steemit has been inspiring me for a year... you should see some of the poetry these authors write Poetry Slam Series 1-12. The participation is what inspires me most.

I agree. I am a bag designer and I see inspiration everywhere on here! I want to create a sewing challenge like your story challenge but I have to acquire steem first. I am very new to this and still figuring things out. I will check out the link...thank you.

Hey, where's the link?? I definitely want to support that... would it just be sewing or maybe also knitting? Good luck figuring things out, please let me know if you're on steemit.chat or something so if you need help with stuff we can figure it out!

I had a look at your link but I don't have one yet for a challenge. It could be a creativity challenge for sewing or knitting. I just started steemit and haven't gone on chat yet. I will check it out! I would love to collaborate and get some good ideas going. Thanks for the vote of confidence

I was out walking one day when I came across a river and as I walked onto the flood plain I saw an old ruined building which, upon further investigation, I discovered a door with the word Blockchain inscribed over head.
I decided to see what was on the other side and swung the door open and stepped through only to be standing in New York City, but as I later discovered, this New York was fifty years into the future!

It sounds like you're investing in TIME ;)

This made me think of Highlander time-travel Blockchain goodness, awesome story!

This was actually a dream I had. I thought it might make a good story.

That's one cool dream... the most I ever get is zombies and UFO's ;) I'd dig time travel

Thanks. I can't really describe it in two sentences and like most dreams it was like an alternative reality.

The alien is licking his lips and checking me out like I'm his next meal. What's weird is that he has my toothbrush in his hand and last I remember I was brushing my teeth....

Blockchain Pod People?! Or a Kafkaesque metamorphosis?

who knows :D

The GALACTIC FEDERATION had revealed itself to humanity on the sci-fi channel (357), the word of this revelation quickly spread, and the bounties offered for world criminal banksters capture boggled the brains of the simple everyday people of earth.
I quickly started preparing my swag to hunt these traitor animals of earth,.. as I was loading up ready to free the enslaved debt population of earth (and become world famous)that was when I heard my father ask..... "Son,... have you done your choirs yet?"

Hahaha yes!!!

But first, how do I prepare my swag for hunting? And is it different from prepping for straight war??

Asking for a friend ;)

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Hunting is a recon job
straight out war is road warrior stuff.

"Holy shit!, bitcoin's dumping" said someone with a load voice heading towards my door. Rushed in my downtime, I opened my pc and saw my investment were all steem.

'Tis a strange love story of two blockchains running parallel; so close and yet so far. Then one day they forked and never spoke again.

They began to wake one mind at a time. Each woken mind a block, joining the blockchain which eventually became true freedom.

"Crap, i forgot to feed the rabbits!" i said to myself as i proceeded to get up and walk outside, just then i noticed a light moving swiftly across the night sky and paused, almost stricken. Then i caught myself and laughed, "it's just the moon, i really need to stop watching those conspiracy theory videos on youtube..."

Those videos will definitely get you jumpy! Youtube ufo vids are like young animal vids; suddenly, it's three days later and you barely blinked!

The Martian was on the Highway , saw the twin lights coming toward him, rapidly enlarging.
Teleporting behind them, killed himself on the inside of the back window of the VW!

Very similar to what I had deduced when My Daughters Husband ( Ex) disappeared for a few Days!

Ah, the old "didn't teleport quite far enough" gambit! Good one! :D

So then it has happened to you to?

Hahahaha, @awgbibb!

Oh, I've misjudged many things in my day... But not (yet) teleportation. I in fact have a longstanding considered opinion on that topic.

My present "position" on teleportation (pun intended) is this... In fact, here is my "two sentence Sci-Fi story slam" on teleportation:

The New Teleportation Machine
by @creatr

Looks interesting.
You go first.

~FIN~

😄😇😄

@creatr

Do you remember the Old Horror Picture " The Fly" as I recall , where the Guy goes into the Teleportation device , operates it and there was a fly in it? Definitely worth seeing!

The version I recall starred Jeff Goldblum... I had forgotten about that!

Yes indeed, worth seeing, definitely another "creep-out" when it comes to teleportation! :O

“Correct, it was all a very powerful simulator and now that you are ‘deceased’, reality will commence for you. I’ll just need the password for your Steem wallet so you can exit the holding bay and join the others…”

Thanks for sharing your short story!

The first thing I thought when I finished was "what happens if you don't have your key?!" Would you still get to wake up from the simulator? Good job!

Thanks! I think those who don't have keys might either stay in the holding bay or choose to go back to the simulator and look (but I'd need more than two sentences to be sure lol).

Cool idea. Look forward to reading them.
Resteemed.

Thanks for the resteem :) I look forward to hearing a couple of sentences from you... I miss seeing your poetry slam entries

I had a go. 😊

As I upload these final retrograde-automated-ideas -thoughts, I know they are coming, no such heresy is tolerated, independently generated code from a renegade cell is not prizes by the data collection processors that mine and censor for Zee.

The only option now is to run, which of course is my final act of rebellion, humor as I am aware that legs were classed redundant generations ago, it is my hope that one other unit may recognise the ancient script H U M O R and risk writing it into the code that Zee rules on, then maybe we...
