What will happen today?
This one isn't too over the top. It is the story for today. It is tough to be overly structured in real estate because something unusual often gets your attention. So here is the quick story for today:
I have been requested to list a house and a person I really respect suggested me to them. Therefore, while this may not always be a listing I would accept I will and will get the home sold. Today, I am trying to get a head start and send one of my clients over there to take a look at the house before it goes on the market.
Sounds like a good plan so far, right? Generate interest even before the house is on the market. Small problem. The neighbors called the cops when my clients parked in the driveway. The potential buyers had to explain to the cops why they were there. I'm surprised they didn't call me so I could explain.
That is the story for today. I give a buyer a hot lead and they find themselves almost arrested for trespassing. The joys of real estate.
That is embarrassing and could go wrong with a less understanding client (did they understand?) On the other hand, it's a good sign that the neighborhood is one where people watch out for each other and anything out of the ordinary is reported. My mother once called the cops because our neighbors asked us to watch their house while they were on vacation, and a strange van came and parked in their (secluded) driveway for an extended period. She told me I should always do the same if I am in any doubt because thieves will use a truck or van that looks like it's doing some kind of home services, but they've already cased the house and know the occupants are away.

They were frustrated and I am sure embarassed. They are not holding it against me.

Whew! That was lucky.
When I was buying property out in Arizona my realtor and I showed up at this place that had been taken over by a homeless squatter who told us the bank had authorized her to live in the house "to keep an eye on it." It was a bit sad - she was living there with her 8 year old daughter. The place looked like the house of a hoarder, with trash, food wrappers, clothing and other junk piled in every room. But the piece de resistance was the fact that she was keeping 4 gigantic live chickens inside the house that were roaming around loose. My realtor turned out to have a chicken phobia, so she screamed and ran out of there! The squatter lady told me we shouldn't mind the chickens because, "They help keep down the scorpion population!" The lady proceeded to show us everywhere in the house that had termite damage - I think she was hoping the place wouldn't sell, and I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't.
Anyway, even though my realtor was embarrassed and apologetic, it didn't bother me at all. I found the whole thing hilariously entertaining and I am grateful for the experience because now I get to tell the story! She and I became friends and we still refer back to "the chicken house".
