the story of the catastrophe of Lake Nyos is still well remembered by the people of Cameroon. Those who still believe in superstition, associate the disaster with the power of evil spirits that live and envelop this lake.

Local residents believe the death of 1,746 people living around Lake Nyos was caused by the evil forces that appeared on the lake. This lake also earned the nickname as 'The Bad Lake' alias Lake Evil (Bearer Shit).

Though the disaster can be explained scientifically. The disaster that occurred on 21 August 1986 was caused by bursts of CO2 gas that occurred suddenly and in abundance.

No less 1.2 Kilometers of CO2 gas covering Cha Sebum, Nyos and Kam villages around the lake. A total of 1,746 civilians were killed by the explosion.

Formed in the 1600s, Lake Nyos is actually a volcanic crater. CO2 gas content in this lake is very high. The researchers say that within a gallon of Lake Nyos water, it contains five gallons of CO2 gas.

In the geological world, Lake Nyos is an anomaly. Instead of being released into the atmosphere, Lake Nyos actually stores CO2 gas inside to create a high-pressure container. The lake is like a time bomb that can explode at any time.

Evidently, in August of 1986, the incident took place. Lake Nyos explodes. The scientific term is known as the limnic eruption (Limnic Eruption).

Within 20 seconds alone, the lethal gas spreads up to a radius of 15 miles. Almost no survivors. Even if survived, the presentation is very little.

As in Nyos Village alone, only 6 survivors from 800 residents who live there. This disaster also claimed the lives of approximately 3,500 head of cattle.

After the terrible event, the researchers found a way to avoid the same incident. They installed a gas pipe downstairs to escape the CO2 gas trapped inside the lake.

So do not be surprised to see there is water splashing from the lake like a fountain. It is a deliberate process of CO2 gas release.

Now, Lake Nyos can often be visited by tourists or researchers who continue to monitor the condition of the lake. Hopefully this lake is not acting again in the future.
