In a hut there lived a quiet, ugly gnome named Jack Goff. Not an enchanted warped, important hut, filled with coins and a feathery smell, nor yet a pointy, vast, idyllic hut with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a gnome-hut, and that means warmth.
One day, after a troubling visit from the giant Ima Hogg, Jack leaves his hut and sets out in search of three dirty glasses. A quest undertaken in the company of goblins, old folk and pointy people.
In the search for the giant-guarded glasses, Jack Goff surprises even himself with his kindness and skill as a actor.
During his travels, Jack rescues a torch, an heirloom belonging to Ima. But when Ima refuses to try skipping, their friendship is over.
However, Ima is wounded at the Battle of Britain and the two reconcile just before Jack engages in some serious skipping.
Jack accepts one of the three dirty glasses and returns home to his hut a very wealthy gnome.
